obviously replacing the gasket solved the problem, but were you worried about any other worse problems until replaced? wondering about expediacy here.

mech. stated it would need to be replace but did not express any alarm: like wait for next 30k or so service [last one done June '06]...small leak....and annoying for early mornings.... don't like it but not urgent if not a major issue.
    so
were you worried about it lingering?
    thanks

What is it exactly in the first post that's made the diagnosis so suspect?

It was a long time before it was diagnosed and I worried plenty about worse problems. Vacuum leaks are uncommon and mechanics tend to overlook the possibility of them causing problems. Once it was found, I had it repaired immediately. I think with a modern car, I would get it done right away. They are already programmed to run as lean as possible, so I would not want one cylinder running leaner than the rest.

Tend to agree with you, I dont think the real problem has been found but evidently Ferrari insisted further investigations were done to trace the source of this running problem, from the outset there was a fuelling problem to cylinder number 6 and when hot the car would missfire very badly or just run on 7 cylinders....

Should have a further update as the car is going on the road today.....

    Perhaps I am misunderstanding you,
    but when I obtained a 'Heritage Certificate' for a '79 308,
Ferrari asked for the chassis and engine numbers.
Thus, it would seem that they do keep these records,
which enable one to verify the correct/original engine for
    a certain chassis.

I think they do have a record of the original motor number, but they don't match the chassis numbers as in the early days.
