OK i'm prepared to be ripped apart...I know this is a Ferrari forum :)

But in either case I would love to hear your thoughts on trading my 430 for a 87 Countach QV. I know they are two entirely different cars and I know I'm asking for personal opinions, but still want to hear your thoughts.

    Good idea or bad idea?

The way the prices are dropping on the 430s, I thought the Countach would be a classic car that won't depreciate to much more. Please don't respond "if you are worrying about the money, you shouldn't be in either car" heard that story a million times.

I can afford either car, just looking for a change and like I said I feel i can trade the countach in in a year or so and it will hold it's value, where the 430 will probably drop another 30K.

    Thoughts??? anyone ever own both?

Do what puts a smile on your face.
    Isn't your 430 worth 40K+ more?

Sure is. I guess I should have added that into my scenario. I would be getting $40K in cash as well.

and both will put a smile on my face :)

I get it about the Countach......I really do. The first time I saw one was in Italy in 1982 parked outside the hotel I was staying at in Florence. I was 15 yrs old and it made a DEEP impression on me. It defined "Exotic" to me and will always be an icon in my eyes. I have pictures of it somewhere that I need to dig up.

    My humble opinion buddy............

You'll miss the 430..........BADLY!!!!! Take it from me brother, I sold my 430 about a month ago and whenever I see one driving around I literally get a sharp, jabbing pain in my chest! It's sort of like a collapsed lung meets cardiac arrest, but MUCH more violent.

maybe you should post in the Lambo section. I think they would have some good insight.

I own neither, driven neither, but I think I remember reading on one of the threads the the Lambo isnt exactly the most comfortable car. You should also consider that the Lambo is obviously older and will require maintenance, which is very high and must be done by someone who knows the cars (although I think Dave Helms could work on it). I remember a few threads of repair shops skipping out on the owner or not repairing them correctly. There is at least one (at Forza) which was neglected and is now $22k (basically for the frame).

That said, the Lambo is definately more striking to us "children of the 80s", the original super car.

As far as investment potential, I'll leave that to the Lambo guys.

Hope you enjoy either one depending on the decision you make.

I guess it depends on whether or not you want a car you can drive by yourself, or one where you will need to arrange a support vehicle when you go for a ride. That 40K in extra cash may come in handy.

How many miles do you put on your F430...? How many miles do you plan on putting on the Countach...?

Would your purchase be a tribute to the late, great Farrah Fawcet...? :)

LOL, I hear ya. I am so tossed right now. You guys got it right, being a product of the 80s I keep saying I'm going to do it. I feel if I do it now and miss my 430 I can probably buy it back next year for 20%-30% less than what I sell it for (assuming I get close to retail). Decisions, decisions...I can think of worse things to lose sleep over :)

Two incredibly different cars and different experiences which leaves you to ask yourself what your realistic expectations are. The Countach has got NOTHING on the 430 except for its looks. 20 years of vehicle development will do that for you and many people fall in love with the poster and cannot live with the reality of the Countach. I strongly urge you to try and spend some quality time with the Lambo before deciding. I have met tons of people for whom the reality was way different than the dream. That said I would take the Lambo myself because I know what I would be getting into and the Lambo is just more interesting for me than the 430. With regards to price the Lambo is not likely to go down as their prices are pretty stable. That said they will not go up either any time soon. What can bite your face off is the price of service. As such you will want a recently driven car with recent service records. Avoid a garage queen as that $40K cash you get for your 430 will be eaten up before the first 1000 miles are up. Good luck with the decision.

I used to think "who cares if you can't see" until I drove a Lotus Exige around Salt Lake City - 0 visibility out the back ....... it was horrifying no lie I went straight back to the dealer.

Both will depreciate. One will drive you around town and the other to the poorhouse. At least your mechanic will be happy.

That deal isn't getting any better.

    One car is an icon.

The other is a "used car".

Make up your mind. Don't let anyone else do it for you.

I climbed into an Elise last weekend. Thank goodness the roof is removable. I would have never made it out of the car otherwise. Dam* that car has a small passenger compartment compared to a Countach.

    I've had a Countach since 2006.

For me it was a dream car.

If I was looking for a car that was fast and had the latest technology, I would probably choose the 430.

But, the Countach does something for me that transcends speed and modern technology. The car makes me feel good.

It is raw, unrefined and lacks many of the creature comforts that are in todays cars, but I absolutely love it.

But the question isn't how the Countach makes me feel, it is how does it make YOU feel?

Take it for a test drive, and I mean spend two or three hours actually driving the car. The first hour will be spent getting "used to" the idiosyncrasies that make a Countach the car it is. After that you will begin to appreciate the car for itself.

If you choose to go the Countach route, get a PPI before you buy the car. Make sure it has had services done (with a papertrail).

    Good luck.

my first ride in a Countach was in 1984, I was 16 and change... my cousin was picking it up from the dealer in Monaco, and we were driving it back to Cannes... we were overtaking cars on the twisty roads on Monaco 3 at a time... it was unreal... when we hit traffic in Cannes, it got warn inside the car, and we didn't want to use the A/C (engine was still in break-in mod), so we just lifted the doors up and cruised on the croisette... it was UNREAL... when he took me to Circus for a night out clubbing, and parked it in front of the club, he had to pull the "countach-reverse-parking-manoeuvre with your butt seated at the door bench, the door lifted up, and your head hanging out"... IT WAS UNREAL...

i can go on and on forever... i can tell you it was the poster dream car of the 80s... that its design is timeless... that it's hardcore... etc. etc. etc... but it won't change the fact that it is nowhere near as driveable as the 430...

if you're looking to "collect", get the Countach... if you want to drive, keep the 430... people who worry too much about price retention/devaluation/appreciation/etc. tend to end up not enjoying and driving their cars...

and by the way, the Countach phenomena is bigger than "lamborghini"...

(go get the Countach quickly if it's truly clean... LOL)
