    Greetings,

A few days ago, an intermittent problem affecting the instrument cluster backlighting cropped up on our 2005 F430. With the lights on, the instrument cluster will not light and then come on all of a sudden. It doesn't flicker; it's either lit or it isn't. All of the instrumentation functions correctly; it's just the backlighting that's malfunctioning.

The center console and HVAC/Radio and Window controls all light fine and adjust to the brightness setting when used.

It behaves like a loose connector/wire, but thought I would reach out to forum members for any suggestions.

    TIA,

    Mint

The dials are lit from the backside by means of a single electro-luminscent panel, while the indicators and the LCDs are lit from the backside by LEDs.

The instrument lighting, (excluding the LCD crystals) is activated by turning on the dipped lights and it can be adjusted using the multi-function control switches ( H 1.03).

The LCD's crystal lighting instead, is activated upon turning the ignition key to the ON position. When the dipped lights are switched on, the LCD crystal lighting is dimmed, thereby featuring the so called "night setting". The LCD crystals have therefore two different setting levels (a day and a night one). Furthermore, the night setting can be programmed stepwise, on the basis of the instrument adjustment.

What's seem to fail on your instrument panel, may be the "single electro-luminscent" panel. There are 4 connectors at the rear of the instrument panel but none of them is dedicated to the back light. If a connector was loose, it would affect other functionnalities of the instrument panel. Removing the instrument panel requires to remove the Airbag, steering wheel, covering dome.

If you need more info, I can provide you all the details.
