Just read the Autocar test from Rockingham Track - 1 lap results. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th places came from points that were accumulated from Road and Track testing over two days. 1st Porsche 911 Carrera S Wet Time (Sec) 94.7 Dry Time (Sec) 81.4 2nd Noble M400 Wet Time (Sec) 98.0 Dry Time (Sec) 76.6 3rd Ford GT Wet Time (Sec) 93.6 Dry Time (Sec) 80.7 4th Ferrari F430 Wet Time (Sec) 101.5 Dry Time (sec) 81.1 5th Aston Martin V8 Vantage Wet Time (sec) 100.0 Dry Time (sec) 84.4
Impressive dry time by the Noble, espacially as it costs about half that of the 430 Porsches are so good there boring
Too right. Who wants a Porsche anyway. Its a German lump of metal! Ours have a soul!!! At least we of the 'faith' can look back at our past and know that we have helped in contributing to the design world. Porsche can look back and tell us how sexy engineering is. And as for the Ford GT, we'll they did a lot of work didn't they!!! I know whats more important to me As for the Noble, i am neutral on that one.
We're obvioulsy partisan on here, but that a Porsche comes out on top in an Autocar test is not a particular surprise. The figures actually make sense to me (mostly). I wonder what diff settings were used on the 430 in the wet to set that time? But the latest Porsches ought to be better in the wet owing to weight distribution and basic handling characteristics (pre 993/996 ones would be a different story). Noble time is also not unexpected, but the cost comparison angle is completely moot. Put a Caterham 7 with 200bhp or more into that same test and its dry time would be better still (with a capable wheelman) and it's even cheaper. I'll bet there are some people at Aston Martin having a bad hair day today though. Not only is the V8 way over the initially suggested pricing, and the design has lost bits of its edge, but it's also quite a bit slower than the car it was pitched against (a fight that Ferrari still seems able to avoid picking, unless you actually own a Porsche)...
How did porsche come out first if the Ford GT beat both its best wet and drt times. Also Noble had best dry time?
The was a better overall drivers car in the wet and dry combined and for drivability, practicable and useablilty.
Does Dale work for Autocar now? And yes, put the keys for the 430, Porsche and Noble on the table and see which set gets picked EVERY time!
430 Key's all day ,i drive more cars than autocar, they drive them but know nothing of the mechanic's of a car and how they do in the real world.
If I could only have 1 car it would probably be a 911. They are great all round and other then exclusivity are equal to L and F IMO. But since I can have more then one an F/L + a BM gives me what a P can most of the time Although I'm always tempted to add a P. Especially those times when I find myself in the Lambo and realise I should have taken the BM. Or in the BM and I have some time off and wish I had taken the Lambo.
Whats everyones opinion of the Noble?? I had a discussion with Murph about this on Wednesday evening crying into a pint after missing the Ruf 911 - I was down on the wait list for a new Noble, then changed my mind and bought a 355 - that blew up and other than the Ruf not an awful lot has taken my fancy since April. Differing opinions on the Noble, sometimes I really fancy it and I think yeah - then people like Andy put me right off it - and I think about the interior which is hideous and go off it again. Then get tempted by it all over again... Someone tell me its wrong?? Andy you aren't allowed to reply
What, not even to suggest a decent Pantera or Ultima? FWIW I respect the Noble for its ability. But I wouldn't be able to drive it too quickly as the tears in my eyes from laughing at the interior would spoil my vision. And there are plenty of other bits that I thought made it look like a very overpriced car (did you know that the engine bay has more wiring than the National Grid and more pipework than the OPEC oil fields? And that the rear wing is bigger in surface area than the pitch at Old Trafford?). Mind you, the build quality was excellemt compared to the TVR Tamora sat next to it. That car had bathroom sealant all round the plug covers and a special burglar friendly glovebox option (the panel fit was so bad a burglar of average size could actually walk into the glovebox, mooch around wondering which pair of Boots sunglasses to steal and walk out again without anyone ever knowing). And the bonnet would have flown off if I'd farted near it. Someone please have words with Eric as money's burning a hole in his pocket and he's going to end up doing something silly. Like buying a white 911 cab, or spending a small fortune on keeping a Noble running. Stig - send him some pictures of your car (or you Nige). I've told him should buy one of these and a Caterham
All said and done you are right thats what everyone says. Mate of mine said I would look like council estate chav who has built his own motor if I get one. Yet I keep getting tempted.
Seen the Pantera that has just gone up on Pistonheads classifieds - YUM!! Give me some credit Murph, the 911 Cab would be in black... OK maybe with white leather....
