Thanks for the great recommendations: Edward (FLVICE) was the man of the hour with the backup extinguisher. Thanks Ed.
All of our underground mining fleet use a SDS Fire Suppression System, It basically consists of usally a 65Ltr bottle, this bottle is filled with about 45Ltrs of water and about 5Ltrs of fire retardant, we use a product called 'AFFF' the rest of the volume in the bottle is filled with a charge of nitrogen, that forces out the mixure when you either set off the system manually or when the system sences a fire, the way it sences a fire is that we run pyro tube around components like the engine, transmission, hydraulic pumps, exhausts etc......the suppression set off system uses a special discharge activation head on the bottle which uses equalized pressure in the bottle and also in the set off circuits, there are usally atleast 3 remote manually set off points fitted on the machine so you do not have to get near the fire to set off if there is a fire not near the pyro tube fitted, that system also is the same pressure as the bottle, this keeps to retardent in the bottle, as soon as you discharge the system yourself or the pyro tube does the pressure differance opens the activation head on the bottle and then is attempts to extingush the fire, The whole process from start to finish after is has been set off requires by mining law to spray retardent for atleast 3 minutes (I think, possibly more now), We do not design the systems, we just service them, I've seen a few fires undergound on our machines and I can tell you these systems work, Which does help us seeing that I work over 1 kilometer underground too Have a look into my work....http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=125953
