So while digging through some old car photos I came across some from the 1989 B-J auction in Scottsdale. You have to remember that back then it was the only B-J auction and it was quite an affair. You could be standing next to or celebrity or chatting it up with a Saudi prince or princess. People came from all parts of the world for this thing. you never knew who you would run into. Today it's more of a traveling carnival with not nearly as much prestige.
Of course 1989 was the year after Enzo's passing and Ferrari mania was at red line. Everything and anything with a prancing horse was commanding crazy money. There were so many Ferraris there it was insane. There was also quite a few other Euro exotic marks in attendance bringing in the big bucks as well. Crazy days!!
The weeks prior to this auction Arizona was in the middle of one of its worst winter storms ever....El Nino I believe it was. Sorry I cant put the squiggly above the "o". anyway it poured rain from just after Christmas through March and let up very briefly during the auction weekend. The Auction grounds were a mud pit. People were wrapping plastic bags around their shoes up to their knees, special walkway planking was being thrown down all over the place. A lot of cars depending on where they were staged had to be flat bedded up to the main tent. It was a mess to the max but an awesome one at that. This was also the year the Ferrari GTO sold for $1.2mil.
Does anyone know anything about the BB512 with the convertible conversion? I always thought it was interesting.

I'd like to see the list for what these sold for back then, unfortunately the Barrett Jackson website records don't go that far back. Thanks for sharing you photos.

August of '88; the barrett Jackson auctions are in January (in this case 5 months after his death). The market was going wild at that point.

    Yup!

Wonder if this car and the chopped-Boxer had the same consigner. Maybe Joe Sackey or Gary B. know anything about this Miura?

Would love to see what that 288 sold for-heck it probably didn't meet reserve and the high bidder still has a headache from not grabbing it

You're spot on-I missed that, I was thinking he meant another car not pictured here. What's amazing is this was 1989. 288s have never been in reach!

You can see a little Daytona in that chopped boxer-especially the back of the car-never noticed that before. Always a fan of the bimmer M1 also

Ok so I did a little more digging and came up with a few more.

Also is the cover of the book for that year aswell as the inside page showing dates of the event. I also included page 13 as it has a really strange 400i. Maybe some of the 400i guys can chime in on that particular car.

Enjoy! it's been a fun trip down memory lane. :)

I would have picked up the Dino for $30k, and wouldn't have had to be at work right now :(

I'll probably puke when I see what that Shelby KR went for...

Well, I was 17 and waiting tables in my 1st yr of college. If I could have scraped up $30k I guess I could have slept in that Dino for the next few years--but that would have been a hell of a lot nicer than most of the places where I did live in college!
