I have a1995 456GT. While getting the tranny rebuilt,I thougt I would do the throwout bearing and clutch. I notice the flywheel end of the clutch pate looks different than the diagram. Did ferrari change the flywheel and clutch plate on later cars? The flywheel side of my clutch plate is 37mm, but a had previously purchaced a cluch plate on ebay with this end 52mm.And ideas?

Andrew- From what I can see in the parts catalog, the throw-out bearing was changed at engine number 36799, but the flywheel and clutch are the same from the 456 and F512M through the 612, but it is a later part number, 194475, replacing 153724. The catalog also shows the same flywheel for the 456 through the 612, but again it is a newer part number, 193051, and replaces an earlier flywheel, 151258.

One of the pros will have to tell you whether those parts changed when Ferrari updated the replacements.

Thanks Terry. I think the hub of the clutch facing the flywheel changed at some point and the part of the flywheel that accepts the disc changed also. Will figure it out.

Andrew- If worse comes to worst, a new flywheel is about half the price of a new clutch.

I just buy parts from a known trusted supplier and don't worry about it. Far to many flakes, losers and junk knock off parts on Ebay.

A different part number does not mean a part change. Supercession likewise does not mean a redesign.

I am unaware of a flywheel redesign.

Too big of a job to do it twice. One time right is a better idea.

An old thread but I've been searching F-chat on this subject...

Now that I got the engine out of my '95 GT, last night I removed the clutch. To my surprise, a quantity of oil seeped out of the crankshaft after pulling the intermediate shaft out. It was enough oil to drip down the flywheel into a small pool on the floor. Then it stopped. Is this normal??? Before I pulled the shaft out, the clutch housing and the whole area around it was clean and free of oil/debris. No signs of oil on the clutch itself, either.

When I look down the bore of the crankshaft, I can see something that looks like an oil plug. Would that be leaking? From the drawing in the WSM it is not quite clear to me which part of the oil galery in the crankshaft this plug is supposed to close.

    Please advise.

Probably your rear main seal is leaking. Since your engine is already out, it's a doddle to change. I wouldn't suspect that oil plug, as it's usually put in there with thread sealant/locker.

But it is definitely supposed to be dry in there, is it?

Yikes...looks like that clutch was slipping with those burn marks.

You can probably resurface it though.
