I have a 2003 456 that i love for its styling and driving balance of civility and performance...but a slightly throatier exhaust would be nice. i have a tubi on my 550 and i definitely do not want that resonance at idle at loudness on this car...different character in my opinion. anyone try one of the other exhausts on a 456 with good results? Do you think that it would be analogous to the 550 for tubi, cargraphic etc?
    thanks ccr

I took the Tubi off my 95 456 and went back to the standard exhaust... the Tubi was just too much.

More and more, I like the standard exhaust. It's quiet when you are putting around town, but when you open it up and get to around 5k RPM I think it sounds pretty good.

I would try the CG exhaust if they have one - has to be very similar to the 550, in which case it'll be perfect.

    Chuck,
You took delivery of it? Great! Congrats! I didn't end up buying that swaters blue 456, but picked up another one from Atlanta in the Canna de Fucile (gunmetal gray) color. It has a tubi exhaust on it. I think the exhaust on the 456 has different charcteristics than the 550 for sure... for some reason, the 550's just seem louder. The 456 that is on the car I bought, granted it's a GT and not a M, has a low rumble but not obstrusively loud.

At idle, it is very nice and doesn't get very loud until 5-7k rpm.

I would say go with Tubi - they have a high quality product for the 456. Anything else, you might be compensating performance and build quality.

Btw, thanks for your tips on that blue one, though! :)

    Good luck!

How about an Ansa system? Doesn't anyone use Ansa anymore?

The set on my 330 sounds fantastic: not too loud, not too quiet.

Mine has Koenig (aka Fuchs) system on it, which is somewhere midway between stock and Tubi as regards dB. I like the exhaust note and think it suits the car- it makes it sound powerful (if you know what I mean) but isn't oppressive. The other one I've heard is the Hamann; a friend has one on his 456, and if anything it's better than Koenig. It sounds 'angry' and in terms of loudness, it sits between the Koenig and the Tubi. Another option I've heard of, but not heard, is the Tubi silenced silencer, an oxymoron I grant you, but good by all accounts.

If you can get to hear them in real life that's the best way. Video footage never seems to capture the real sound somehow. Manu at www.scuderiasystems.com should be able to help.

i just ordered the Stebro cross-over pipes and plan to order either a Quicksilver ($1,700), Tubi($2,100) or Mille Miglia ($2,300). Once put together, I will post a sound file.

I believe Tubi has fixed the 3 to 3500 RPM resonance problem seen in the 550 which I assume either never happened with the 456 or is fixed as well.

The Tubi on my 456 had a terrible resonance around 2,000 RPM-- right where I tended to cruise on the highway in 6th.

Hi, I have Hamman silencers on my 456 ( Kevin's friend ). They sound great. At idle, it has noticeable rumble from the outside of the car, which is nice to hear from the inside. Below 2000 rpm in a higher gear still a nice rumble a bit louder than idle speed, between 2000 and 3500 rpm in 6th gear sounds fairly quiet, no resonance and comfortable for cruising. Above 4500 rpm in any gear.. awesome sound, wakes the dead.

The original silencers were too quiet for me, although I have kept them in case a future owner wants them.

    Cheers
    Gareth.

Is silencer a British synonym for exhaust or muffler?

I have the Tubi on my 456, and have no problems at any rev level. However, from within the car, it is rather quiet in the higher rev- range. I used to have a Daytona, and the interior noice above 4000 revs was just fantastic. Intake sound, mechanical and exhaust together made it screem. With the 456, you only hear the exhaust.

Does that mean that I need K&N air filters, and is there such a thing?

    Rob,

I forgot to say that, as I am British and lived in NYC for 2 yrs a while ago, I always enjoy the opportunity to translate from Webster's Dictionary to Oxford English Dictionary or vice versa, metaphorically, so let me know if you get confused by weird English phrases in the future....

    James.

    Hi James.
Someone recently told me that it would be insulting or even vulgar to greet someone in the UK with the familiar American "What's up?"
    Is that true?

No I don't believe that would particularly bother anyone in UK. It would be unusual, but not in any way offensive. The Bud "wassuuurrrp?" ad campaign was all over here as well, so the expression has come back into usage more than it used to be....

However, the UK expression, "I'm going outside to smoke a ***" definitely wouldn't mean the same thing in NYC ! (In English it means to puff on a cigarette - I think you know the American translation, not very PC.)

My job is all about ensuring that the ten people from seven different countries actually take away the same meaning from a discussion, so you can imagine the daily opportunities for mis-understanding. Great fun!

    James.

In New York City I believe it means "I've found way to pay for parking." ;)

    Thanks for your reply!

By the way (and in order to bring this back on topic) I suggested an Ansa exhaust.
Why don't owners of modern Ferraris seem to use Ansa aftermarket pieces?
