the fans on my 512 are loud, but i thought that was just because of their location next to the door. but the 456 fans are loud too ! is this normal?

You can hear them quite well, even more so outside the car.

From the title I thought this thread was about people who are fans of the 456. I certainly am. And yeah, the fans are noisy but as long as you don't hear rubbing, rattling or other sounds of death everything is probably ok.

It's a Ferrari redundant safety feature, if you can't hear them - they have failed you must stop the car and call the wrecker .... I think I read that somewhere in the onwer's manual.

well they hiss and squeal a bit, as if the drive belt slips some, but they work just fine i guess since they come on at the right temp and then go off at the right temp. i am amazed how quickly the engine heats up - i have a very short drive to the office and the oil temp is way higher than the 512 ever got in that time. but again, all seems and acts normal - so far !

I noticed when I bought my 456 that they are a little loud, but it doesn't bother me. At least I know they are working.

    I believe it is normal..
I think they could not fit a larger radiator there since oil radiator takes up some space. They are Spal Fans.. There are quiter ones out there but you loose some flow with the quite ones. My friends usually say it sounds like a little factory is in operation under the bonnet. I like it. :)

here is another thing i have only noticed now with a few days ownership...the fans come on right away (even first thing in the morning) when i start it and the engine is still cold. they stay on for about a minute and then go off. is this normal?

I'll have to check the start up noises...currently getting a top end like gear noise, but RifleDriver said this wasn't too unusual on startup...still has me nervous, but trust RD....

anyway, I don't believe I every hear belts sounding like they are slipping. might check the last time belts were replaced
    BTW
the fans are electric at least in my knowledge since 1989: don't know if earlier models were electric too. Thus, my comment to check the last time belts were replaced....sounds like the only belts to check are the direct engine connected belts.

My fans do come on right away also, so I think that is normal. It may be because the a.c. is on. I have not tried turning my a.c. off to see if the fans come on right away but I have seen cars in the past that turned the fans on any time the a.c. was on.

If the belts are squealing, get it taken care of right away. They shouldn't be squealing.

However, yes, in general the fans do come on quite a bit, and yes, they are loud. Turning the climate control system off does reduce this a bit. I am in the habit of hitting the "Stop" button on the climate control when I shut the car off, and I don't turn it back on until the engine is running smoothly after startup.

i do this on all my cars, as i figure the on/off switch is a mild way to start/stop fans, a/c, etc., rather than take a spike in juice from starting up the car, or turning off the ignition.
