Does anyone know if the fuel pump can be easily removed without removing the tank in a '95 456?

Absolutely: there is adequate access through the trunk.
Remove the cover for the disc changer, remove the front panel and you will see the fuel tank with 2 openings giving access to the pumps.

If your problem is the disintegrating rubber enclosures, they can be replaced with the sponge like material used in the fuel cells for racing.

I see. So how does this work, you just put this foam inside the tank and it will expand??

spanner wrench used to remove brass ring nut easily. pulled on pump cover and assembly eased out. immediately can see the gasket attached to fuel pump is disintegrated. fortunately, basket filter has contained remnants. Will call Daniel in AM to purchase parts. I happen to have a NOS fuel pump to will replace it as well, thought I think the vibration is from the lack of the gasket, not a pump issue. Should I pull the other side and replace it as well, even though no issue right now?

I believe someone offered or had a better solution then the rubber part. I recall seeing pictures somewhere with telfon or some similar made material.

parts not available. looks like a 550 or 456 M gasket and cover may work as a retro fit, but they also not available. going to try to see what can be done with custom made fuel cell material. also stopping off at alfa shop today and see if they have any thoughts.same pump is in tank of 164

I think there was a thread somewhere of a guy using the innards of fuel hose to replace this rubber. The inner rubber of good quality hoses is different from the outer, it is the inner rubber you want as the outer will disintegrate eventually. He used a cut open piece around the pump and it was mounted with a regular hoseclamp. It looked slightly iffy but I am sure it would work perfectly.

Isn't that rubber piece available separately? I believe it is, or has the stock run out? Indeed this setup is used on nearly all Fiat cars of the time including the 155 and 164, but there are differences. You can browse Alfa and Fiat parts here (amongst others): www.tuynder.nl

oss117. you 100% correct. pulled it and it also partially disintegrated.not as bad as right, so not shaking in its enclosure, but 99% of the way there.pump is fine. will replace gaskets with either Fuel cell foam OR Nitrile Rubber. haven't decided yet. getting mixed opinions. its not a big deal to replace them but my 46 yr old mustangs still on its OEM fuel pump, fuel lines, and can sit for 4 months and then run like a champ with no prayers or coaxing. Ferrari, SpA is useless and they should due ashamed. the rest of you with 456, 550 will have increasing problems with these gaskets. oxygen, oxidation, age, and alcohol degrade the molecular structure, just like they do in human arteries ( i am a cardiologist and its the truth). FOA should make a decent product that lasts. If not, they should be able to continue to supply the OEM gaskets, or an improved version, which they are not doing. Pathetic.

So I will post pics once I get everything put back together. But suffice to say that while NO ferrari parts supplier here, or in UK could source any gaskets (#153188), when I pulled my pump out of the tank and ran the part number, it was same as for a mid 90s alfa 164. So I went to some old cached alfa website, as well as a local alfa shop, checked the repair manual diagrams, and lo an behold, FERRARI sourced the whole bosch pump, gasket, basket, and I think the anti vibration gasket that attaches to bottom of housing from alfa. So while Ferrari isn't making them now, I was able to buy the part from an great alfa supplier ( PM me for names ) and got them i the mail in a few days. They are 100% the same and fit perfectly. FYI the bosch pump for the alfa is ALOT cheaper than for the 456 and its the same part. M

It's great. I now realize my cold start stalls were due to poor fuel delivery. Car starts first start each time and is incredibly powerful now. Because the gaskets had disintegrated into the filter basket, the flow was affected. I'll post some pics later. Alfa appears to be 100% the same as the Ferrari! When I told giovani the Alfa supplier he said "I knew it would be!" m
