@Everettpa1 & @Aerosurfer Here you go, the dark 456 GTs are beautiful gated shifters. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Beautiful car. But separately, I don’t love being called out on BAT (I can’t reply on there for reasons that don’t merit derailing your thread for). I’m in the market for a 456, and I’m not touching that car with a 50 foot pole. I agree with the seller that BAT’s description was probably unduly harsh, but getting that car back on its feet after it’s been sitting for god knows how long and has plenty of indications of questionable workmanship in the engine bay already is not remotely the same as maintaining a properly running and driving car. It’s going to be $15k just to get it back on the maintenance schedule before you start “fixing” anything like suspension or A/C that the seller already acknowledged are problems. I look forward to joining the ranks of 456 owners soon enough, but it will not be with that car. To me, the choices are 1) spend $20k-ish to get it on schedule and drive it until the wheels fall off 2) spend $50k to get it on schedule, fix the major stuff and enjoy it without worry 3) spend $100k to gut and restore it and have a show quality car you can still drive. These options aren’t my cup of tea but as always it might be right for someone else.
I don’t follow the intricacies and values on the 456 like I do on the 550/575 but this end bid to me seemed amazingly strong? Wow?
The guy really, really, really wanted a green/tan. I won’t tell him about the US spec, verde silverstone/tan with similar miles and completely sorted and on maintenance schedule that sold less than a month ago for $90k. If I wasn’t in the middle of moving and getting to a new house while the sale was going on (my stuff was literally on a moving truck when the car was picked up), I would have bought it. I had the BAT car in the 50’s. Very, very strong result. But you can’t put a price on love. Hopefully it will go well, but also, that we will get the chance to see what the bills pile up to. It needed A LOT.
I’ll be frank, I was thinking it needed to start with a $4 but again I’m not in tune with 456 intricacies. I get “must have” a green but wasn’t even a US car so again the CA market ultimately likely won’t be a home (legally). One thing I have learned during COVID is the wealth that is out there being spent on cars is almost “not-extinguishable” so hopefully this was bought by a very strong guy that can spend the right amount or do the work and not a normal Joe who will have a financial tummy ache.
I would have bid in the 3’s. I thought it *should* go in the high 4’s. But I figured someone would want it in the 5’s. Mid-7’s was not on my radar at all. I thought it was a phenomenal sale for a no-reserve. Huge gamble and he cashed.
2+ years ago this would have been an accurate statement. Look back thru past auctions and my jaw is floored that descent 6speed GTs could be had in the 50s still
@Aerosurfer not arguing that these were undervalued forever, but when you can get a sorted car for under $100k, the $80k after fee sort of seems excessive for a stories euro/JDM car
Thats for sure! Not sure about buyers remorse for that guy, but i was just as surprised too. The magic of BaT. Hopefully he has a good honeymoon with it and gets what he expects. But who knows, maybe the (regular, drivers quality) sorted cars will finally push through that sub 100k barrier. Yes i guess not what you are hoping for, yet at least. Everyone keeps saying these are undervalued.. to what extent and how fast will they get 'valued'
I think $90-100k for a totally sorted Hagerty’s 3+ car is not unreasonable. Beyond that you’re competing with 550’s… and these are cool, but not 550 cool. We’re not there yet, but they’ve certainly found a new following in the past year or two. People who bought 4’s at $45k and are looking at the current market should feel good. But I see single clutch 575M’s under $100k and I do wonder…
I’ve been doing that BaT value thread for awhile and if you can buy Tareks or Nifty’s old 550’s in the 130 range then a 575 F1 has to be AT least $35k-ish lower….and a 456 has to be lower. What defies logic is the Porsche situation especially given the numbers. if there was a 550 floor at $200k given what they are and how few there were that would not surprise me. I remember maybe back in 2011-ish when I was hunting a TdF 550/crema in the high $60ks and I missed that boat and even now I can’t ever see 550’s going back to that level. the market is so odd and at the same time fun.
@AMIRL love the car. Moving our conversation from BaT to here. I live in Pittsburgh. My car was imported from the Netherlands. It arrived in Linden, NJ after clearing customs and I drove it home last September. You can definitely get a better deal by importing from Europe than buying one in the States. Even after the extra costs and hassle of importing. I paid $78k for a #2 car with 16k miles. Just took it out on the highway today for a nice run. Love this car and think it’s only going to appreciate more.
That’s exactly it. If you’re an agnostic buyer with 200k to spend what do you buy. If the options are a sorted 456 for 130, a sorted 550 for 150, or a sorted autotragic 575M for 85, the answer to me is not a 456.
Unless you want the back seats for kids, wives, dogs or girlfriends. Then it’s a short walk, the 456 is simply where you have to go and it is not a bad compromise BUT my eye did wander over to the lower priced California’s… but not for too long, as it does not have a V12, etc… It look a long time for us to locate and acquire what would be seemingly be the less desirable of specs (GTA) but it was exactly what we wanted. The wife cannot drive stick and we live with either LA traffic OR blast up the coast to Monterey/Malibu (which the auto is superb for). That said, when I see a 575 under $100k — it hurts my brain and I want it very bad.
I’m not totally in love with the lines of the 612, but there’s so much more car there I’d have a really hard time turning down a F1A/OTO over a sorted GTA knowing how small that gap has become.
The 612 is WAY too wide for a major metro like LA/Manhattan. It could barely fit in our 7 car driveway due to the standard width here in LA PLUS unlike NYC all the streets are 2 way streets which sucks. I think our width limit was 74 inches or something like that to pass our gate. It was very specific. We looked at ONE 612 during the hunt. The 612 is ALOT more car though.
I would say that it is good to really define what you REALLY want and buy just that. For me it was easy. I had a Daytona Black metallic 456M GT with green interior. A fantastic car. Sold it as I owned it with a friend. And he needed to get out of the ownership to buy a house. I REALLY missed that car for a few years. But what I REALLY wanted was a dark blue 550 Maranello with crema interior. Because I found that and fullfilled my dream, I don't need another Ferrari. For me it is the oerfect car. It will have a ten years anniversary in my ownership nech year. I am still in live witth that car even if I have a few other cars aswell. This is more important to me than the price.
It has now 169.000 kms., and I have done 96.000 of them myself.... The engine runs like it came out of the factory yesterday. Last summer I had 331 kph. on the speedo which I believe is not too much over the actual speed. It is an electronic speedo anyways. It is not my daily driver, but I try to use it regularly. Even in the winter, I drive a few "laps" inside the underground parking garage. I believe it keep it happy.
