What a scene . . . I went in for brakes and after doing the clutch, and a major, and bushings, all of which I am thrilled to have Auto-Gallery in LA help me with . . . we still have no brakes . . .

brembo won't sell me the big brake kit for the 550, saying it won't fit but not telling Ferrari or me why not.

Then they promised to make my car the prototype for their new big-brake kit for 456's, and I have been willing to pay . . . didn't ask for anything for free . . . now they want to back peddle and do nothing. Several weeks of promises and now zip. I hear that is pretty typically brembo . . .

Hmmmm, what to do - anyone got any bright ideas?

What have you done to make this car not so dramatically underbraked? (I already went to proterfield pads . . . that helped) - I just love this car now that I found the right tires for it (nasty sticky goodyear Eagle F-1 GS's - **#!!!*!! YES). Now for brakes . . .

    Help!

BTW, passed that 575 (below) handily in the next turn, no bigge . . . this 456 has embarrassed many other Ferraris . . . no wonder I want better brakes!

Nice to see the MGT out there on the track... I took my MGT once in Spring Mountain Track, and surprised to see a heavy big GT still handles and fairly quick for it's size... Is that AAA Fontana ROVAL??? Looks like it to me... I am going out there in Sept.17th and 18th with my 550M...

Peter, what diameter rims do you have?

For the best brakes, fit 19 inch rims and put a set of MovIt ceramics on. You won't be disappointed! Had these on my 456M GT for a couple of years now and they just keep getting better. Not cheap mind you! Also available in steel if you want to keep the costs down a bit.
Taz has a similar set on his 575M, there are pics if you search.

Many thanks! Now on the trail of Movit and Stoptech alternatives. Really helpful.

Having had it out at Cal Spdwy (AAA) Roval 7-8 times (yes you spotted it!) and Willow as many or more times, Buttonwillow and Chuckwalla too, I've found the stock rims (17") to be the fastest. Picked up a set of HRE 3 piece with the correct offset (no spacers!) that look really cool (see below) but really aren't faster - maybe it's tires . . .

The HRE's are 355 40 19's rear and 265 45 18's front fitted with Pirelli P-Zero Rosso Corsa's - I am not as happy with that tire as with the Goodyears on the stock rims. I've had mixed results with the Pirelli's, finding them more greasy, controllable but more slippery than the Goodyears. Been thru Michellins (PS II's, not for this car, too much rolloff at extreme adhesion points, horrible wear characteristics), some other goodyears (GT compound - too hard - GS mucho mo betta, great wall strength with predictable adhesion before, during and after).

I'd love to find some barely DOT trackday (dry) tires, but sizing for these HRE's (rears) is really limited - Hoosier, Advan, Yoko, Toyo, Hankook, nobody seems to have a good fit for this weird big rear rim . . . leads? ideas?

Then the diameter of your rims is probably the reason why Brembo does not want to sell you the big brakes, don't you think?

let us know how it goes, it'd be interesting to learn what direction you go :)

tires, if your aim is strictly track, but DOT
the bridgestone re55s are getting good reviews here

of course closest thing to a slick, you could go to something like hoosier R6
