Any one know the pros and cons between the two versions? Not just performance but ownership? Maintainence? Significant problems? Thanks for your comments.

Im not an expert here and there are plenty of other board members that can comment. Unless youre a mechanic and/or own/owned both its hard to say. I have the auto but preferred a stick but couldnt find the color combo. The auto tranny has been bullet proof for me and I 've only had to change the fluid. My guess is the Stick is more to maintain due to the clutch. Just a guess tho.

The main difference between the two is the GTA has an automatic transmission.

No idea about the rest though, never been interested in 456's...

I just made sure to have the transmission service done when I had my 30K service. The day-to-day differences are the same as between a manual and an automatic in any car and depend on personal preferences. The auto suits the character of the car pretty well, although I'm sure I'd prefer the more involving experience of the manual. However, if you use it as a daily driver, the auto can really make more sense, being less tiring and nerve-wracking, especially in stop and go traffic, driving and parking on inclines, etc. (I spent a month in San Francisco, living on Nob Hill and I really appreciated having the tiptronic in my 993). In the US, the manual will probably be a $5-10K premium. Obviously, if you want to play boy-racer or track the car, you'll squeeze more performance out of the manual.

Thanks guys. I am interested in buying one, and to be honest its probably a car I will put not more than 5k miles a year on it. Split 50/50 city and mountain driving. Not a track car, mostly proper GT use. I am in love with this car.....I got a ride in one recently and I just was blown away how amazing of a car it was. I previously overlooked it completly. Car I was in was a manual 01' car...great great car. Your advise would continue to help...thanks again.

I have a 2001 6 speed that I bought 2 years ago and I love it. I did not want the automatic because of the cost to replace the transmission. There has been many threads on this site about this issue and from what I understand the auto can not be rebuilt so it can only be replaced at a cost of somewhere north of $25k. Besides I prefer the manual trans anyway.

One thing is for sure, the 456 is a very underrated car. It is great to drive and the V12 has great torque. Everyone I take for a ride is very impressed with it.

So, you too are looking for a 456MGT? I see from your pics. that you already own a 612??? If so, please tell us why you would go "backward" to a 456? And, how does the 612 compare...or leave you wanting...a smaller GT???

I am definatly a huge fan of the 456. I am not going backwards....this is an addition. I just ordered a new 612 being deliverd next year, so am gonna get rid of my current one. I find the 456 a great car to drive daily. My 612, is a dream this car in my opinion is one of the best ferrari's ever! I truely love it, thats why I swallowed it, and bought a new one, fully customised to my individual taste. I was at the factory last month in the atelier room spec'in it.....oh dear! You can live in that factory...its heaven.

I have been curious to see what owners experience between the auto and the manual. I am not biased....as the car will not be used to set track records or set great lap times to grocery store....hhhahhaha. I just am looking for sound advice, and one that would make the ownership pleasant.

    thanks again for your input.

I have owned my 456M GTA for over 2 years.I wanted an auto as it was going to be used regularly/daily.
I have not seen anyone post.................'My auto box broke, and I cant get it fixed'.
If there is anyone on here who has had the problem,I stand corrected.
It is a great car at doing what it is designed for,'touring'.I drive it for hours, and still arrive feeling fresh. The auto is great in this car,and is a real bonus in traffic/city etc.
I just make sure the gearbox oil and filters are changed as per service shcedule,I guess like most things, maintanance is better than cure.
