I am in the midst of taking off the front cover on my 456 and it appears a lot of thread-locking compound was used on the bolt holding the oil pump sprocket in place, enough that it looks like it wicked its way in between the shaft and sprocket. Now the sprocket doesn't want to come off. Anyone experienced this? I was thinking of gently heating the sprocket to free it, but I figured I'd see if there was a trick or two out there first...

Heating it wont hurt. Be careful of the curved chain guide. It might melt in the process and don't cook the oil in the bearing behind the sprocket.

Thanks - been looking at it warily over the past few weeks as I really don't want to damage it...

Never had trouble getting one off. If I recall the shaft can be tapped back some once the nut is off because the sprocket locates the shaft. The back end is just on a spline. I'd do that first. Had them apart a bunch of times but nothing about disassembly is really memorable because it was so simple.

Makes sense, I may give it a tap or two first.

Not really happy with how much thread locker was used in that area, do you find that on engines from the factory?

    Never. They didn't do that.
