first time since my 1 plus year ownership. the water temp gauge went above 190c. and kept on climbing till the end until the warning light came on. this occured in town traffic at todays outside temp of 16ish degrees. this has not happened before in hotter temps in town traffic.i stopped the car but kept the electric fan running to cool the engine. the car has just been fully serviced and the radiator was changed 2 years ago. oil temp/pressure was not effected. the car ran smoothly during this overheating. after cooling it down for about 10 mins i thankfully found a clear road home at which the temp went back to normal quickly. but as soon as the car was idling back at home the temp quickly climbed up again..
the water fan comes on ok and has been running when the temp was up.
the oil cooler fan also cuts in as there was no increase in oil temp
    just checked fluids..all ok
also the manual states that the belt also powers the power steering which has not been affected so i presume the tension must also be correct.
belts have a cover so it may be a bit involved to remove . is it still worth checking the tension?
from what i understand if the water pump was statring to fail it makes a hollowing noise?
    any ideas....thanks

Could be a failed thermostat (stuck open), could also be a failed thermostat switch. Not a Ferrari or 456 owner, so that that with a grain of salt, just thinking of things that a normal car (like a 928 is normal...HA!) might be doing when you see those problems...

Best of luck and keep us posted... Seems odd that this happened just after a service. Makes me think something might have become disconnected or or not reconnected, but I have no idea what that might be other than a fan, but you say that is working...

Couple of things: (1) check for air in the system - bleed screw is on top of the thermostat housing. (2) change the thermostat, or at least check that yours is operating normally. They dont last indefinately and are relatively inexpensive - cheap insurance.

I wouldn't mess with the belts - if the PS belt isn't squealing, it has more than enough tension to drive the water pump.

I've done both - if you bleed it cold, unscrew the header tank cap first. Check the header tank cap too, could be preventing the system pressurising. I've noticed that a couple of the bigger parts vendors include a tank cap and thermostat in major service kits, that might be a hint.
