My 456 has a leak in the power steering, from the rack assembly. The dealer is telling me that the entire rack assembly needs to be replaced (at a parts cost of $4500!). Is it possible that someone can rebuild this rack, or do I need to give in and replace the whole thing? It is frustrating! I did search the archives, and found someone with a Mondial T with the same issue, who was told the same thing, but I didn't see how he ended up. Any suggestions or thoughts?
After more searching, I found a reference to Atlantic Enterprises for rebuilding 550 steering racks (the 456 should be similar). Has anyone actually used them? Any comments?
I used Advantage West in Palm Springs to do an Aston Martin rack. Apparently it had been rebuilt before with the wrong seals and had stripped threads, but they saved it and rebuilt again for about $350. 760-202-9990 Phil
Ouch! Sorry to hear that, Don. Please post as you work through this. I've been very fortunate with my '98 but I can't imagine the honeymoon will last forever. Ron
Atlantic Enterprises gave me an estimate of $465 to rebuild the rack, and said they've done lots of 456 and 550 steering racks. 3 day turnaround too. We'll see how it turns out!
