My question is about carpet mats that are placed on top of the carpet bonded to the floor in the footwell areas. Were those mats an option, or did they come stock with the 456M?

Those carpet mats were standard. The easiest way to check this out is to ask a Ferrari dealer for the buildsheet of your car (based on VIN) and look for the code CRPT. I have a Cuoio interior but the original owner ordered Castoro 172 (light brown) carpet mats. Both in the front and back.
I also have, what I thought are aftermarket carpets on top of those, but it turns out that the dealer (Ferrari of Central Florida, Orlando) in 2002 provided this option. Those are not official OEM mats but have been with my car ever since and do protect the original mats pretty good.

Could you post a photo of the original floor mats in your 456? Is it a 456 or a 456M?

    Thanks in advance!

"Here you go pal. Mine is a 456M. Front mats have metal fasteners to lock it in place."

Thank you, but what is underneath the mats? More carpet or bare floor?

OK, back from a very fun car week! Lets do the mats first. Here is what I have been told:
    - there are apparently two types of mats, one type with the black plastic areas as what @pchop showed above
    - the Daytona seats (that were an option) have similar mats without the black plastic areas and are a bit thicker. They came with the Daytona seats. One of the judges mentioned that the US dealer could possibly have installed them, as they did with the shield apparently.
    - they both have the holes for the metal fasteners that you turn 90degrees to lock the mats down
    - what I call the protection mats are significantly thinner and in my 456M are on top of the ones that are locked down.
    - under the mats is bonded carpet with a plastic liner on the side. If you pull hard it is easy to pull it off the metal. There is no carpet over the metal cover (for the electronics) in the passenger footwell.

To be truly honest, I did not know any of this and I have asked at least 10 people and have had very inconsistent answers, even from judges. The "I don't know, that is a really good question" was probably the best answer I have had.

The front mats are my primary mats, the small ones in the rear are the secondary (protection) ones. Pictures of the footwells speak for themselves.

As for car week, I did get judged twice. Once on the FOC event on Thursday downtown Carmel which was super busy and great fun! I did get silver and learned that license plate frame and not having the cheap plastic stem caps are both half a point penalty. I was not there to win but just to know what the state of my car is. I did get Silver awarded.

At the Concorso Italiano on Saturday I fixed those and did get Gold! Those were two completely different events but both fun to do. Not sure what the Concorso will do next year with the new (partially British) ownership, we'll see.

But for those of you that never have been judged, I do advice to go through the experience just once, it is fun to see 3 people in jackets to look at every detail of your car and take notes....

@456dreamer - We had our 246 Dino judged by the FCA at Concorso Italiano in 2018, and it was interesting. We won Platinum. We did it for the same reason that you did - to see what, if anything, we needed to attend to.
