Ferrari tech said there is problem with software might fail the smog in California .. known issue 456m 1999-2000 Is it true?
Even if it is plenty of techs will pass u for $300 ... illegal but i found out very common here! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yes- i was stunned when i found out i could pass smog with no cats on my TR. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm surprised that there is any concern. My 98 550 passes easily (stock cats,Tubi exhaust). the only problem is that it needs an operator with a clever foot to hold speed on the dyno they use.
Mine failed it’s first test last year, but it was due to a non-smog related CEL. After a fluids and filter change, codes cleared, and battery recharge, it passed with flying colors FoSF stated a low battery can cause the code (P0748). And after a bit more investigation, the low battery was caused by failing diodes in the alternator. New AGM battery and alternator solved the problem.
I had fantastic results on the DYNO in Texas. Tune your motor. Change your plugs. Clean fuel system and filters. Your should get great results too if you are not burning oil and your cats are good.
Well, I have an update... I took 98 550 to our third smog test today and failed...! Reason was OBD System Checks/ Tech put a scanner on it, and found "Air" and "Cat" faults. I put my cheap Bosch scanner on it at home, and what do you know... Catalyst Monitor and Secondary Air Monitor show "incomplete." I noted that the equipment has been "upgraded" and this could be a new check... but also noted that the HC(especially) and CO measurments are marginally greater this time. I will check with those know and report back if this is common.
I have owned two 550's and one was a euro. Both passed cali smog with zero issues. I could disconnect battery and reset all monitors with a single drive cycle! Maybe the faults you have are real faults?
Look in your OM for the battery disconnect switch, which Ferrari calls the "battery master switch". That will disconnect everything except the alarm system so she does not think you are trying to steal her.
if your getting check engine lights - 1st check is your battery up to snuff ? ive spoken with a few v12 owners over the years getting check lights - next step seems to always be connection issues. these cars are getting old - may be time to the scuderia rampante gold kit
FBB, My car has also (twice) passed Cal smog with no problem in the past. I tried your suggestion of battery disconnect and "cold-boot" the system, but my OBDII scanner still reports Auxiliary Air and Catalyst monitors "incomplete." I'll post in Technical Q&A and see if this is a "known issue" My bet is that the new machines at the test site are failing the car for this condition when the older ones ignored the "incomplete" status.
Nope...your monitors always had to be set or it is an automatic fail. Those monitors will not set with a real fault. I forget the rule. I was like you could have 5 of 7 monitors and still pass. Then they changed it to maybe all need to be working and set? The current rules are online. It has to do with what year the car is and how many monitors it has etc. I see you are in norcal. I wish you were in socal I'd try and help.
FBB, Thanks for your advice and encouragement.... I drove the car nearly every day for a few miles, and the monitors did not set. On Saturday, I took a `50mi drive mixed highway and surface streets, and when I got home, the Catalyst monitor was set, but not the Supplemental Air System. Called the testing station and asked if this was OK, and the answer is yes, pre-2000 cars can have at most one monitor not set. So I took it back and passed. (As they were completing my paperwork, what should pull into the parking lot but a Ford GT.... the tech looked over and said, "Must be my lucky day." I was so overwhelmed I did not remember to take a picture) So, a moot point remains: is the Supplemental Air System monitor on my car "broken" or are all <2000my Maranellos running w/o a Supplemental Air System monitor? If you have an OBD scanner, could you confirm on your car? As well, the answer to the OP is, NO, there is no generic problem with a <2000 456/550 passing Cal smog testing, given that the car is running properly and has been through a "drive-cycle" since the battery was disconnected. Robert
hey all - i'm new to the forum have recently purchased a 2000 456M GTA from out of state - i'm in california. have tried smog several times but each time the secondary air monitor isn't ready. was told to drive for 60m under 60mph by the smog guy but that didn't work, so tomorrow first thing i'm going to try the drive cycle recommended by ferrari. any last bits of advice or experience on the cycle, or the issue itself would be very much appreciated? obviously hoping not to have to go the referee. thanks.
I ask this with sincerity….plus I’m crazy stingy…..after 2 fails do you not send it to a Ferrari specialist and ask them to get it to pass?
i don't know if it's this car / era in particular but i don't get the sense ferrari have any magic wands with this issue, but that's the next step, and obviously i'm hoping they do.
