... and, of course, the tacho itself. I'm wondering if a short in the tacho could pull down the tacho signal coming from one ECU and the signal going from that ECU to the other ECU (on the inter-ECU wiring). Are you getting an ABS light? The ABS system uses engine rpm signals from the (right hand?) engine ECU.
Wanted to provide an update here. Following advice given by Gian Paolo at Affordable Supercar Parts to always check the ECU connections on a 456, I pulled both connectors, cleaned the contacts, plugged them back in and the tach was back. Have gone on several drives since and have not had any tach issues again.
Darn... I was hoping we could find out which ECU was generating the signal for the tacho. Anyway, good to hear your problem seems to have gone. It seems that the ECUs are more likely to cause a tacho problem than the sensors on these cars.
