456M GT - fresh oil aroma in cabin

I have an 03 car, and there is a continuous smell of oil inside the car. It's not burning oil, or smoke, it's more like the smell you get when you walk into a workshop - that kind of mix of oil and metal and engineering. It doesn't seem to contain exhaust fumes. It's a continuous thing as it comes right back even after driving with the windows down to clear the cabin air.

Searched for this and can't see anything directly applicable - would be grateful for any suggestions as to where to look first for a potential leak or damaged cabin air pipe or if this is just a standard feature.
