Greetings! Recently bought myself 456M GT with a very low mileage - 10.000 km (6500 miles) in outstanding condition. Want to make a full maintenance including oil change, coolant, brake fluid, gearbox oil and power steering fluid change. Encountered a lot of scary stories about timing belts - so thats the question - do I have to change em urgently disregarding low mileage? Or I have nothing to worry about? The thing is that our dealers are stupid and don't know classic Ferraris. They know only latest models and thats it , so I am not eager to let them perform a procedure they don't even know.

One more issue - how is the power steering(suspension) fluid change performed? Is it a complicated procedure?

    Thank you in advance!

Armen- Belts should be changed every 3-5 years. You can download a 456M workshop manual from ferraridatabase.com. Changing power steering fluid is relatively easy and there is a procedure in the WSM.

Armen. Welcome to the site. If you are not sure of the history I would have them changed. Better to be safe.

My 456M was eleven years old with 7K miles when I got it, and it had never had the belts changed. I took it to the shop and had that done immediately. As Taz has already pointed out, their max lifespan is supposed to be five years, regardless of low mileage.

    Cheers,

    George

Details of the service requirements are in your handbook. Yes, you'll want to do the auxiliary belts, tensioners, fluids et al as provided in the HB.

Hi, out of curiosity was your car originally delivered in Russia? Would you happen to know how many such models arethere?
I suppose for complicated jobs you could pay someone from another european country to come and do a large service or fix smth. I mean if you really struggling finding right people locally.
I knew some f-specialists that used to travel from Uk to Greece or Cyprus to service client's cars there.

Have a look at your history just to be sure of what has been done recently (last 3 years). But I would say:

    Cambelts
    Cambelt bearings (use Hill Engineering)
    Water pump belt + bearing
    AC belt + bearing
    Engine oil
    Oil filters
    Fuel filters
    Air filters
    Coolant

All of these are to change completely.

    Check:
    Gearbox oil
    Hydraulic fluid
    Washer fluid
    Wiper
    Tyres
    Brakes
    Handbrake
Suspension for leaks (will probably be leaking)
    Window sealing
Make sure water pump not noisy and car is cooling perfectly

I may have missed things from here too.

    Hope that helps.

Adnaan- Hill Engineering does not make tensioner bearings/pulleys for the 456-612 series of V12s. They do get theirs directly from SKF and inspect every bearing. Ricambi gets theirs from Hill.

I would add power steering fluid Plenum hoses, and refrigerant to the list. Power steering fluid is especially important, since it also provides the fluid for the self-leveling rear shocks

No my car was originally delivered to germany in 2003 (production year) and imported to Russia in 2007. I guess that the first Ferraris officially imported to Russia were F430s and 612s (cause the first dealer opened in 2005).

And 456 is a rare find even in Moscow - maybe 2 or 3 cars including mine. Silvio Berlusconi's armored version of 456GTA was recently sold also in Moscow ) It was in a dark blue colour if I remember it right. But here we have a lot of 430s, 612, 599s including GTO models, 458s and so on - classic Ferrari is a rare vehicle here cause mostly nobody values em - if a Russian has plenty of cash - he goes to the dealer and buys a new model not even looking at the price )

    A month ago I spotted even an F40 near a restaurant - so that's a good sign )

Here we have a small community of the classic Ferrari owners - but it does tend to grow very slowly.

Thanx! I'm new to Ferrari"s since I ve been a great fan of Lamborghini ) But recently I had a great opportunity to purchase a Ferrari in great condition from one of Putin's friends ) Nevertheless I like old Ferrari's as well as Lamborghini's! My opinion is that modern cars do not have a Soul! They are just computerized plastic toys and a bunch of recycled beer cans! IMO! Anyway if some of Ferrarichat members finds himself in Russia - feel free to contact me! I think I'll make his journey worth his while!

Yesterday took my car from the dealer - performed all prescribed operations including all fluids change, timing and auxiliary belts, tensioners and pulleys replacing, handbrake adjustment - the bill was around 7000 USD

Unfortunately a minor leak of water radiator was found and a rear left shock is showing the sign of the leak.

Very similar to what I did on my car. You will really feel the difference on the way it drives.

Regarding your radiator I was able to have mine repaired and repaired for about £140. New radiators are a lot more!

Thanx Taz! I think that I'll make it during winter time - anyway the car will be stored in parking from October till April - thus there will be no hurry! If it is more or less easy operation - I'll try to remove em from the car myself and keep it on the stands at the carpark )

Thanx for the link - I'll check it out too!

I wiill surely repair it too - cause there is a minor starting leak at the bottom coolant hose connector maybe because of a corrosion. I don't feel like paying 7k$ for a new radiator! (((

This thread is very useful as I beginning eyeing 456M's. Taz, in a previous thread you countered my statement that the 550 is twice the price. To get a solid 456, you're gonna spend 44 or a touch more.

All the 550 out there are asking for 78 to 95.. No one is buying em all up, therefore, it's a gamble at what the true mkt value is..

Can you share some wisdom sir?

Dean- I have not seen many good 456s/456Ms go for that little money. Statistics being what they are, you can cherry pick, and so can I, to prove most points. 550s and 575s appear to be near the end of their depreciation cycle, and so are the 456s/456Ms.

As an owner who has had a 456 GT for 1.5 years I think that a well sorted car will sell for $55-60K. The current ferrari-market letter has them at $57K.

You can surely find one in the mid 40's , however, plan to spend 10-15 K getting it sorted out. The real issue that few address are the fuel pump and tank gaskets and the entire clogged fuel lines and injectors as a result of current ethanol in our fuels. Not to mention engine mounts, failing thermocouple ECU's, leaking cam cover and seals. Repairs start adding up in a car that has not been cared for and has sat around with low milage.

The list in the posts above certainly mentions many services that may have been neglected in a 456 selling in the mid 40's.

Once it is all sorted out it is a great car!

    Best regards

    AK
