I'm thinking of purchasing a 1999 or 2000 456M GT (manual), once I can locate one (they're not easy to find!). Have any of you heard anything overly negative about the mechanicals of these cars? I know about the window mechanism issue in the early cars, but anything else????
    Thanks!

I have read that they are very good GT / cruisers. Very high speed on the top end. They seem like a good value at the moment.

The only things I can think of off hand are engine mounts, and the fact that these babies tend to run hot...so make sure both your fans are up to the job!
You already know about the window fix, thats where my expertise ends....

However, this has been discussed about a billion times before on F-chat (like most other things, lol) so.....try the search function first! It is your friend!

I will start you off with this thread which you should find helpful.

I recently bought a 2001 456mGT and love it. Ron Tonkin has a nice looking 1999 6 speed one for sale now..its listed on ebay. Glad you are going for a 6 speed. Most of the M cars came as automatic's but the 6speed's are out there just a lot harder to find.

I also got rid of the awful stock exhaust system for a Tubi..what a difference! It now sounds like a Ferrari should.

Just make sure you do a detailed PPI including leakdown and compression before you buy anything. If you have small kids this is the Fcar to get. Way underrated car IMO..and a bargain at todays prices. Good luck.

    In Dupont there was a red 99 6-spd asking $95k, 18k miles.

The Tonkin car is a beauty for sure! I'm afraid it is a little overpriced for a 1999, no matter how nice. Where's Dupont?
I have 2 little boys who love to go with dad everywhere, in fact I brought home a 355b one day (for an o'nite test drive) and my 5 year old looked at me in disbelief! He was shocked I would even consider a car that didn't have a back seat for him (I don't think I've ever seen him look so hurt either before or since). It was then that I knew my fate was sealed! I had a 2003 Maserati Coupe Cambiocorsa for about 6 months, a nice car, but no Ferrari (not even close). The 456M GT is the only car for me I'm afraid! (I currently have a 911 coupe which is a great car too, great fro scooting around with the kids)...still....have this burning sickness for a Ferrari...I'm sure you all understand!

oops, dah, you meant DuPont registry...never mind.
Thanks, just checked it out, nice car, and appears to be priced right!
By the way, and please excuse my ignorance (rookie), what does "PPI" stand for, and who should be considered qualified to do it?

    PPI=Pre Purchase Inspection

Any decent independent or Ferrari service shop will be able to check the car over before you buy. Will cost anywhere between $200 for a quick kick the tires job or about $800-1000 for a detailed 8 hour full mechanical check including leakdown and compression. I would go with a good independent knowledgable in exotics. When you find a car there will be plenty of people here that can tell you where to find a good shop for the PPI.

Currenty have C2 cab and with 2 little kids, 456M seems to be only viable option.
I am have been looking for one in the same range for about 2 month and no luck. I have to consider GTA since my wife does not want manual...
Based on my questions on the subject it's a great car that is not in favor, hence the price.
    Good luck

I bought my 2003 456M GT in May ' 03 and have never looked back.
Except for some very minor issues covered by warranty my 456M GT
has been flawless and the best car I've owned, in terms of beauty,
prestige, and perfomance. Any other positive attribute worth
    mentioning also would apply.

I opted for the 456M GT versus the GTA and did a bi-colour appearance
that Ferrari was touting in 2002-2003, the so-called Scaglietti programme.

    Good luck!

I would recommend Tim Stanford to do the PPI if you are in South Florida. You may also ask him if he knows of any 456 for sale in the area. A local guy in North Palm Beach County told me he just traded his 2000 456 because he was not using it enough. I think it was traded to a lease buyout dealer in Fort Lauderdale, though I can't remember the name.

Thank you all, this is the classiest message board group I've come across!
I have Steve Barney at SportAuto in Greensboro, NC looking for me as well. If any of you know his operation (sportauto.cc)you'll know that he is first class as well.
I'll look into Tim Stanford when it becomes time, thanks again.

Are you from NC? If you ever get down to Charleston, SC, we can take mine out for a spin in case you have never tested a 456.

Thanks for the offer. I used to live in NC, now I'm in Florida, the roads here aren't anywhere near as much fun. Charleston is a great town, love the Isle of Palms!

one of the few post 97 456 6 speed cars i have seeen is for sale in CT, the owner thinks buyer can take over lease as he is upside down on current one, I talked to Putnam who has the lease and they said no take-over option, but it could be re-leased thru them. Could the two of you just go to swaplease.com? Car was on this site's ads all spring, I can dig it out if you are interested.
