i dont know what this is, but when i get in the car in the morning after having left it in the garage overnight, i think i can smell gasoline. the gauge is showing a little less than i had hoped for in town driving - at the moment it is setting itself up for about 250km out of a tank vs 600km on the highway. there is no puddle on the floor, or any other apparent leak. but the smell persists and the consumption seems abnormally high.
i have just had the car for a month, and it only had about 3500 km on the clock when i got it. and it was completely checked out byt the ferrari garage and the swiss authorities before i received it. at first i thought the smell was kind of a new leather smell since it had hardly ever been driven until i bought it, and on my recent trip around italy for 3500 km it was faultless and suffered no incidents, so perhaps this is just normal consumption and normal smell.
    anybody have any comment.

You car is a very low mileage one, so it is possible that you might have a small crack in the fuel lines. It might not have been there before, or got worse as the car is now being used. It usually happens with engine old leaking, but im guessing its possible on the fuel lines too.

As for the fuel consumption that seems to be way too much. It sounds like something needs to be looked at. Have you had the car serviced when you purchased it? Maybe the car is running too rich. On a previous car I found my airflow settings were way off and I was using too much fuel too.

Im nto a mechanical expert but im sure you'll get some people who will reply who will be. Good luck.

I would personally check the fuel filler pipe..

    Mine was cracked.

I think it should be the same on the 456.

I had same problem with my 456gt, there is a vent pipe that runs along side the fuel filler pipe when fuel is used , vapour is left , on my vent pipe there was a small hole and the vapour used to vent through this hole giving of a smell of fuel. hope this helps

well i had a very cursory look this weekend while the car was running. besides not really knowing what i am looking for, i didnt see any obvious leakage from what i thought was the fuel line coming into the engine. where else should i look? and how do i inspect this fuel filler vent pipe?

Do a search on this as it has been the subject of much discussion. There can be several reasons for the smell.

My 550 needs gas tank seals replaced. Something I suspect Chevy owners don't concern themselves with. Suffice it to say that there is much more than meets the eye. 2 pumps, 2 lines, 2 returns, accumulator and more.

Ross, 456 and 550 suffer from failed fuel tank breather pipes which will leave a fuel smell when the car is left, if you release the pressure in the tank after parking it will help reduce the problem but not remove it, basically it'll need a new pipe

I had a fuel smell on my car - all the time - coming from the boot area. I tightened the filler cap a bit more and the problem has dissapeared.

    As for your consumption. 250km on a tank - that's track-day consumption !!!!!!!

I get about 280 MILES for "foot down" and town work and about 360-380 miles (about 600km) for motorway.

If there is a fuel smell and no visible leak, I doubt you are loosing enough to drop the consumption to that level.

+1, those are my numbers, except for track day...don't do track.
