I was speaking with a doctor a few weeks back and knowing that I drive a Ferrari, he asked me about the maintenance costs of the 458 and 488 coupe - he is moving away from Porsche considering a Ferrari purchase in the near future.
Since I have no experience with the newer cars, I thought to propose the question here.
He estimated driving the car between four and six thousand miles per year.
From the owners here, what should he expect to spend on yearly maintenance? He would take it to a dealer -
the closest one to him is probably Foreign Cars Italia in North Carolina, which I've heard is a first-class operation.
So, what kind of dollars does one expect to shell out per year for routine work?
    Thanks for any help.

Well 2012 and newer have 7 years free maintenance ... outside of that it has been my experience that $2500-$3000 a year would cover tires, alignments, details , and such.
( Taking the mileage allowance into consideration )

    YMMV

Tell him it pales in comparison to the depreciation. I spent $0 maintaining my new S65 and I lost $115k in 2 years on it, maintenance on newer cars isn't where the money is set on fire.

    Nice to have you back!

458 and 488 are fluids once a year. Under $2k/yr. depreciation as above is another thing... might equal his porsche..

Depreciation is hard to judge but 458 doesn’t seem to be depreciating much right now (especially 13, 14, and 15). The 488 really dropped a lot (especially the 2016). You can get one with 5k miles for 230k if it’s not too specced out.

Actually from 2012 or 2013 model year on, maintenance is free for 7 years. So maintenance cost is zero.

Maintenance is not really zero as there are consumables - which depend on the use / mileage. With a few track days the most important cost is in the brakes, then some detailing and eventually the tyres.
Depreciation is virtual as long as you do not sell the car, if it's bought new you need to sell it quickly (after less than a year) or keep it for a long time to minimize it.
3-4 years is about the worst age to sell a Ferrari, a 2015 488 is about there but a 2015 458 is not really in a better situation (as new it was just slightly less expensive than a 488, and it's about the same now). An older 458 has passed this stage, it's significantly less expensive now but its value is more stable.

I don't think there is any major difference - in theory the 488 has the turbos, so an added opportunity for failure, but in both cases the whole package is more or less bullet proof - the gearbox that has been reported to cause some issues is virtually the same...
Then of course everything is aging, but both cars are nearly identical technically (so they'll have the same issues over time).

The 488 will eventually cost more to keep. Turbos are a consumable and failures are starting to show, gearbox mechanical failures (broken shift forks) etc..are also ot unusual.

No matter what car you buy...they will break. It all comes down to your pain threshold for expensive repairs. Buy the car you like..worry about the rest as it happens.
