As many of you are aware I’m trying to improve the cooling of my 458 Italia brakes. As established in a previous thread, the 458 Speciale brake ducting will NOT fit the Italia. I started this post for us to discuss whether the 458 Challenge undertray/brake cooling ducts will fit the 458 Italia.

Here is the 458 Challenge undertray schematic with ducts that I think are designed to somehow cool the brakes, though I don’t see any hoses or routing from the ducts to the brakes? Will this fit the Italia?

I’m this below 458 Challenge schematic I’m focus on parts 1, 9, 22, and 23. I’m not sure what else is required for the brake ducting or what would work on the Italia.

For comparison, here is the 458 Italia underbody schematic:

Here is another schematic of the 458 Challenge front brake cooling system:

I can’t find a similar schematic for the rear of the 458 Challenge that shows the ducting with hoses.

Here are photos of the various cooling components I found online from the 458 Challenge.

Even if ALL the components for cooling of the front and rear brakes won’t work, it looks like the front cooling ducts right on the front suspension arms are independent systems separate from all the other complicated ducting/hoses/undertrays based on the below schematic and photo in parts 17, 23, 24,and 25:

Unfortunately what your trying to do will not work. Challenge car brake cooling system has integrated parts that work with the wheel uprights or hub, front bumper, splitter and the associated duct work that attaches to it. If your going great lengths to emulate this type of cooling system, just buy a challenge car. Alternatively people think they can just buy all the brake parts and ducts for a Speciale. The calipers are unique in that they also have threaded holes for the brake cooling ducts to attache to them. Also, the rear caliper on the Speciale has the integrated parking brake so it gets complicated to convert, again, just buy a challenge car. I have tracked 458 Italia, Speciale, 488 Pista and currently track a 458 challenge car. Street car brakes are just that, designed for spirited driving not consistant track lap after lap. Even the Speciale with the brake ducting would cook the brake pads. I would just convert your current brakes to steel, much cheaper to replace if your tracking that much, performance is comparable to carbon and you can box up the carbons until you sell the car.

There was a ferrari accessory kit with optional brakes for track day. It included calipers, undertrays, brake pads and cooling ducts.I will see if I can find the bulletin.

Those were a factory ferrari accessory. They may not be available any longer or they may have had a part number for the entire kit.

Likely no longer available. I would recommend going to a set of steel rotors and track pads for your track events.
My personal go to is the Girodisc rotors and either the raybestos ST-43 pad or Cobalt friction racing pads. swap them over and bleed before track event. They will outperform any carbon ceramic you put on it.

    John,

After a lot of experimentation and a good deal of track time, I am going to begin my search for a 458 Challenge car.

I can mod the 458 Spider as much as can be done, but the reality is I just don’t feel safe at super high speeds with just a regular seat belt and no cage.

There isn’t a lot available and I may even consider a 488, which is way more car than I can use, but maybe I can grow into it.

The 430 Challenge is about equal speed wise to the 458 spider, best I can tell from running with them at WGI. The 458 version is just better all around - power, DCT set up, suspension, etc.

In the meantime, I’ll continue to mod the 458 s.

    William
