I bought an immaculate certified pre-owned 458 Italia from a dealer. Only issue was a curbed wheel they promised to repair to look like new. Now their wheel guy is MIA and they're giving me the go ahead to bring it anywhere and they'll reimburse. I brought to a local and highly regarded Ferrari authorized body shop and they're telling me they don't want to attempt the repair. Since its a Forged Diamond Cut Wheel. They are saying attempting a fix could make it worse.

Has anyone had success repairing a Lightweight Forged Diamond Cut Wheel (see photo)? I'm in the SF Bay area.

My buddy has those exact wheels and he curbed his (not as bad). I told him to leave it be but he had a local guy repair it. Much to my suprise, it came out great. It's not perfect but if you didn't know to look you would never detect.

The problem with diamond cut wheels is that they need to lathe the face of the wheel in order to get rid of the damage. when they do this, it changes the shape of the wheel, and it is noticeable on the width and depth of the groove in the spoke. I can spot a refinished wheel from across a parking lot. Sometimes it's not bad at all, other times it looks horrendous! Most people don't notice unless it's really bad.
It is unbelievable how many cars I see out there with refinished wheels.

I'm around wheel refinishing at a domestic dealer all the time and that really is not bad at all . I'm sure the reason the dealer or a body shop doesn't want to go near it is that it's off of a Ferrari and it will be insanely scrutinized , hence not worth the aggravation . Figure this , refinishing or spotting it in is way cheaper than the alternative .

What a they do is sand polish the defect out and smooth it the best they can. Then they air brush color / clear and done. Depending on the level of damage the results will vary. I can find my buddies because I know it was there. Most could not.

Dave. The diamond cut wheels have no colored paint on the face of the rim and spokes. They are cut on a lathe with only clear over the machined surface of the metal (which has a grooved look to it, not polished metal). If your were to polish it, it would stick out like a sore thumb and look terrible.

up4speed is correct in his post above. The outer surface of the wheel has to be cut on a lathe until it removes the damage and then painted over with clear. This changes the profile of the wheel and depending on how deep the damage is, may not be feasible. They also have to get their lathe to cut a groove in the wheel that is identical to the original, which is very difficult to do.

You could try to have the wheel repaired, but it might need to be replaced if you want it to look perfect.

Brian, yes, I'm aware but they have paint inside the spoke (charcoal grey). The guy must have used sand paper after to add the texture back as it came out very well. And, the damage was similar to this - just on the lip so it's not like the repair needs to go up the spoke.

It's a normal alloy rim … no tricks needed for repairs !

Have seen many corrected, no problems at all Jason … any good spot-repair garage will do it for you.

Would be great to get your opinion on this rim. It's not scratched. Looks like the chrome finish is peeling. Do you think it's repairable?

That looks like it will be VERY easy to fix perfectly, since it only needs the clear coat redone
