I know this is not the best place to ask for this possible change, but after having my 458 Italia for almost 2 years (which I have enjoyed), I'm starting to get a little bit tired of the lack of comfort, the excessive attention on the street and always having to think and plan ahead where I'm going to park (no valet, no narrow spaces, no crowds, no cars too close, etc.).

For this reason, after viewing the new Mercedes S class which I think has a stunning interior, I'm starting to evaluate a possible change of my car for a 2014 S63 AMG (577hp, 620 lb-tq, lots of comfort, etc.)

    What do you guys think?

It's situational; your true usage needs, kids, etc... but given the launch date of the new S-class, you'll have exclusivity for quite some time prior to secondhand markets. They've invaded Newport Beach and every time I catch myself staring. It's also the answer to retiring Maybach which is intriguing... but let's be serious, they're no Ferrari. :)

My ultimate advice is to figure out both... buy a great daily driver plus keep the 458.

    Thanks for your reply.

I have no kids yet, I use it on weekends and can't have both cars.

You'll be bored. S class are boring no matter how much horsepower they put in them. If this is your week end car and if you enjoy(ed) driving the Ferrari, i dont see how you will be satisfied with an S class.

Im not sure what you mean by lack of comfort in the 458. The car is very comfortable. Of course, not as comfortable as an S Class but still comfortable enough to be used as a daily or a week end car.
What i can understand is the attention it gets. I dont know where you live, and in some places the attention can be too much.

what about getting something in between, like a 991?

Keep the 458 and buy/lease an S class.

Just drove the new s550. Really nice car and am eager to drive the 63. They depreciate pretty fast though. I would keep 458 or switch to 599/F12/FF imo.

I have both albeit a 2013 S63 instead of the redesigned 2014 model (which I have driven). You are right, it does have quite a bit to offer. There's nothing like having all that power while getting a seat massage. Would I ever trade my 458 for my S63...no. Would I trade it for an S65...maybe. I'm a huge fan of AMG and I even have a GL63 but at the end of the day it's what makes you happy. Do you want the attention and pride of having a Ferrari or the high tech comfortable ride of an S63? I might also urge you to look at the Bentley Continentals as that is a fair balance between a 458 and an S63 (best of both worlds). Good luck.

I can also vouch for the fast depreciation. I bought my S63 last year with a sticker of $155k. They are worth about $100k now. It hurts but not looking to get out of it for sometime.

I'd buy a BMW 760 or BMW Alpina B7 before the S-Class if you're looking for a car fun to drive. Personally I think both are stupid and pointless, keep the 458 and lease a M5 or M6.

I've had 2 mercs (1 C63 AMG coupe) and didn't like them. Got a BMW as second car now. They will drop in depreciation like a stone

I think the new S63 is an amazing car. However, the 458 is a different type of car. You really can't compare a 458 to a sedan. I have a new M5 and a 458. To be honest the M5 is a bit boring in comparison to the 458. The 458 does everything the M5 does but better, a lot better! In other words once you have a 458 it is hard to have another car give the same thrills in the "sports car" dept.

In my opinion if you are looking for change go for a car like a P car 991 Turbo, Bentley GT Speed etc… This way, you are able to get a car with sports car excitement with less flash than a 458. Just my 2 cents. I think a new S63 would be a great car but you could grow bored of it in 6 months, that is what happened to me and my M5 anyhow….

I know the 458 has its downfalls with attention they get, mileage sensitive etc… but once you have one its hard to find any modern car that compares, it is that GOOD.

Both are completely different cars...just depends on your needs.

I will probably choose an FF in a dark colour.

BTW the new S class has an amazing interior.

    Best.

I have a current S8. If you are considering a really fast large sedan I'd consider it. It's more subtle than the MB's which is good and bad. It's an amazingly good and fast car.

Get the Merc. When a car isn't fun anymore, get rid of it. Sounds like you've played it out.

    Time to find new ground.

All valid points. Have had my 12 coupe for 2 years but I do not use it as a DD and try and keep it for special drives that have amounted to 7k miles. Great fun but I have a Mas Quat. as my DD that carries much less worry, attention and hassles that those bring. My 2 cents. If you're tired of the 458, get something else for awhile. If you can switch to using it for spirited runs (consider joining a Fcar group for these like FCA) then you may find you want to keep the 458.

Always go with your gut, but if you think you may miss the 458, hang on to it for awhile.

IMO you may have gotten bored with your 458 because you used it as a DD
If your gonna switch why not wait for the new S Class Coupe ?

I agree with both of these:

So you said you can't have both, but pause for a moment and see if you can hang on to the 458 while you try the S Class. I think you might really miss the 458 and you can always sell it later.

I can understand the reason why you get tired of such an intense car like the 458. Btw- if you can have both, you might prefer a car more like the S550 4matic. I believe this can be had with the magic ride control whereas the AMG currently cannot be fitted with it.

You could put the 458 into storage for a few weeks and see what life is like without it. Then make a decision.

It may have lots of comforts but its alot heavier and will not feel anywhere near like driving a Ferrari. To me someone would have that car and the 458. One for fun and the other for daily driving. If you have to choose between the two you have to go with what you want and need more now. Do you want more comfort etc or do you want what the 458 ha to offer? Do you have a daily driver now other than the 458? Would I personally trade the 458 for that car, no! Why not look into a new 911 turbo? Maybe that would give you more comfort but also you wont be missing that speed and sports car feel the 458 has to offer.

OP, sorry to hear you got old. :p

Actually, I ran an S65 for 4 years. Great car but no substitute for a Ferrari. With no kids, I can't see the point.

Sounds like you can only have one car. 911 turbo s or cgt speed would be combination of sporty and comfort. Also consider m6 or s class coupe. Sounds like you don't need a sedan so why get 4 doors.

The new Qp is not even close in performance, refinement, luxury or fit and finish.
The Rapide S is hopelessly inadequate in performance and as a sedan completely inferior in back seat space.
S63 has also AWD which gives year round, any weather capability not available to any other sedan beside S8 ( which btw, runs circles around AlpinaB7 someone mentioned above).
991 TTS is probably the best choice for the OP,as it happens was also my choice.
.....until just before Xmas a truck hit me and the car was declared total loss a few days ago.

My experience with AMG cars (I haved owned a bunch Sl65 now) is the suffer 50 percent depreciation in 2 years with no miles on them. I buy them 2 years old.
