458 for 2014 Mercedes S63 AMG

since I own a 458 and an SLS - I can tell you that you'll slit your wrists if you trade in a 458 for just a regular S class. You'd be better off buying a Cadillac CTS-V and holding on to the 458 for the days you want to go crazy.

Don't do the trade, you'll hate your life. If you're going to trade for an S get the SLS.

 

I don't understand why F owners can't understand someone else just being tired of their cars. People move on all the time. There's one well respected owner on this forum who buys just about every new F car and trades it in a year or 2 for another F car or another exotic.

There's also something to been there, done that.

If the car no longer thrills you or serves it's purpose, get rid of it and move on. Life's too short to worry about these things.

 

I think it's too bad the new Mercedes coupe isn't out yet.

The upcoming CL63 (or S63 Coupe, as they seem to be calling it) should be wonderful.

I have an '08 CL63 (with the 6.2 big V-8) as my DD and I love it.

The S63 is a hell of a car: totally different than prior versions because it is meant to replace the Maybach. I would also test drive the Bentley CGT which I ended up choosing over the S63/65 (earlier version)

Something tells me OP does not really want the S63 or why would he post in a 458 forum?
The sedan would be utterly powerful and exceedingly boring, heavy & quiet, something I could take a nap in. Maybe try a powerful 911 to stay under radar if tired of the attention 458 elicits and parking worries (which is understable).

There are 188 458 coupes for sale on Cars.com. You don't marry a car. You pass it down to the next person.

 

I just took delivery of one a great DD. Fast comfortable, draws no attention.

 

Taking what you say at face value. If you can only have one car and it is for weekends, you will make a mistake buying a Mercedes. No doubt a beautiful car, but as the owner of several cars including a Mercedes S, it is simply a "nice ride". The 458 is for your viscera not your neo cortex. As for parking, narrow spaces and cars too close are always an issue for anyone who likes their car. Best

Trade your 458 on a high-spec, low-mile, as-new 599 GTB as others have suggested. Get it in grey and most people will think it's a Corvette.

 

You have two years with the ultimate sports car and are ready for a change so switching to the ultimate sedan seems reasonable. Go for it and enjoy, you will still have a high level of performance. Obviously you are able to have what you want so why not. That's what money is for.

I certainly can identify with that. I recently got a car for my daughter (Ford Escape, 2.0L turbo direct injection with 240hp, AWD). Pretty cool for a young driver but certainly nothing like a Mercedes or Ferrari. Driving it around a bit, I found that it was very liberating not to worry where to take it, park it, or what people might think. Very handy technology items, it can handle poor weather, and the acceleration in normal driving is actually quite good (0-60 in 6.8!). I think of it as a bargain Range Rover Evoque.

We don't know why the OP said he can only have one car. It may not be finances (he doesn't seem to mind the fact that a Merc would suffer huge, rapid depreciation compared to his 458), but parking space. If so, that's really a shame, as it sounds like what he really needs is something to drive as an alternative that doesn't cause the kind of anxiety he has when driving/parking his 458. A high-dollar Merc won't fill that bill. Yes, it won't draw nearly as much attention, but he will probably still have some concerns where to drive it, park it, etc., and let's face it, all of us are probably at least a bit OCD when it comes to finding that parking space that's wide enough or situated so as to minimize the chances of door dings. So getting a Merc in place of a 458 isn't going to be as liberating as he may think.

If finances are the only thing holding him back, then what he needs is a second car that won't break the bank, and not to trade his 458 for a Merc or other high ticket vehicle, but something that won't worry him. Can I interest him in a Ford, maybe?

 

My wife will not drive anything larger than a VW golf so that is what she has, it was first registered in 2007, now has 160,000 km on the clock. We call it her little bumper car (and it is). She needs a new car and I showed her/took her to drive an FF, a 991 Turbo S, RS7 and a Panamera and she will have nothing of them. Instead we just bought here another golf that we pick up in two weeks…

She loves the fact that she can leave it anywhere (I get a parking ticket a week from her), throw whatever she wants in it and bump into whatever is in here way and not care. If it has heated seats a rain sensor and bluetooth she is golden. There is a key to simplicity sometimes and I think that must be what the OP is after at this point.

 

Thats true but were just debating timing here. Some people regret selling a car they like. Others don't care. It really depends on the kind of personality you are and the OP doesn't really say what they are like so I'm just advocating the more gentle approach which is if possible to take his time. Put the 458 away for a bit, try something else, then decide if he wants to sell the 458. The market for these cars isn't changing that fast that the price of waiting 6-8 weeks won't be that bad. I'm always weary when I feel like I'm being rushed. So my point is: don't rush. The 458 really is an amazing super car.

 

Yes this is my point exactly. I have several cars that perform different roles. There are times you don't want to be in a Ferrari or another high line car- as wonderful as they are.

 

Yes I totally agree. I have my 2011 458 and love it. But wanted a convertible daily driver to replace my daily driver CLS55. So I recently bought a 2013 SLS GT from MBZ. It feels like an AMG track capable car as opposed to the rest of the slushy MBZ line.

Love driving the SLS. It is no 458 by a long shot. But it is a good daily driver if you want high performance.

Also by having both, it's easy to see how far behind AMG/MBZ is building a great driving experience.

 

+1. Can't take the spider to the beach. Lease a BMW through my business at 3% interest and 61% residual and change every 3 years to satisfy my car ADD. I ordered a 2014 x3 35i to replace my 2011 f10. Not a fan of sedans might as well get a small SUV. The car I miss a lot is my honda element. Totally practical and useful with great mileage. I could rinse out the interior with a hose. Gave it to my mom, she drives it more than her Lexus gs430.

 

Why not keep 458. Buy/lease Maybe a Audi s8/s6? Big comphy fast car

 

Another point is if the OP sells his 458 now but then decides he misses it, yes there are many 458s out there but:

1- maybe there is something unique about this one that he likes, or maybe not but certainly,

2- if he wants another one there is likely new transaction costs like sales taxes.... could very well be 15k.

My point- isn't waiting a few weeks worth several thousand dollars? Seems so to me!

 

I think many of us who have owned most cars we desire use cars for different purposes, as well as , reflecting different moods. As for my wife, who I coherced, nudged, bribed , and loved, to finally give up a small car for a Maseratti about 2 years ago (in part because she "loves the name") now has amassed, are you ready --- 1761 miles on the odometer.You know why? She really "feels better" driving our 2008 Grand Cherokee Jeep!

I like driving the 458 on California (open) freeways and some "twisty bits" when found. My Bentley is driven to fine restaurants, where recognized and respected but not abused by valets. I take the Mercedes when not sure about parking. However, truth be known, I leave behind these cars and others I own and drive my Cadillac CTS-V most of the time. It is fast, comfortable, and since it costs about a 1/5th of the price of my 458, gives me a sense of freedom (still look to make sure no one has banged a door into the car). Best
