OK, this is a really embarrassing question but I'd rather be safe than sorry.... My buddies tells me his 458 brakes started to grind on his last drive home - I told him to not move the car until we have a look (11K miles CCM brakes). He say it's the passenger side front. He is not technical so I want to help him with this. I have the 458 WSM and it says to disable the start/stop button (paraphrasing here) before removing a wheel. With the key out of the car, is this really needed? My plan is to take off the front wheel and have a look to see what is going on. I suspect a stone or something is stuck between the pad and the rotor. It may come down to removing the pads which the WSM says the shut off (or disconnect) the battery. I'm a 355 guy and don't know my way around a 458 so I want to be well prepared before getting into this tomorrow. Thanks all in advance and Happy Thanksgiving
I have a center post lift in my garage and remove the wheels all the time to detail the inner barrel. Just turn off the car normally and it will go to "P". Take off the wheel and see whats going on.
Thank you, Dave. As I said, this seemed like a stupid question but better safe than sorry. Much appreciated
Most important to use your wheel pins to r&r the wheel so as not to damage the rotors. Came across this to help. Wheel/tire weighs 40-50 lbs, so this makes it easy. https://www.amazon.com/OTC-1580-Stinger-Roller-Dolly/dp/B000O1E4WU/ref=sr_1_14?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1478900732&sr=1-14&keywords=wheel+dolly Disabling start/stop button is something probably recommended by their lawyers. If you have key out, I don't see why you'd need to do that. Turning off power is precaution to avoid shorting the brake pad wear sensor. If it grounds out, you will need to reset light and possibly replace the sensor (it's a consumable part; once it's covering is compromised, it needs to be replaced). But if you're careful not to disturb it, you should be fine. If you were doing rear wheels, the car automatically locks up the rears, so if you wanted to spin the wheels you would need to put it into car wash mode. But if you do, realize it could roll away!

Sometimes just throwing it in reverse and rolling back a few feet will pop out whatever's stuck as well. Worth a quick try.
Well, my buddy is loosing his mind Pulled off wheel and inspected everything - no issues. Took car for a drive - no problems. So, whatever was stuck cleared itself out Easiest job I ever did
