yes please find out what the actual fault is, your symptoms sound exactly like one of the sensors going out, speed or pressure..mine was pressure sensor, did same thing, would throw light and sometimes lose even gears for a a quick second then back to normal..i did both speed, presssure and also temp sensor for good measure total was under $8k at dealer

Will due, tech said there were multiple faults that Rarri observed, to determine new box. However, before she went it, the worst case was code would get thrown and i'd lose odd gears. When I'd pull over and restart, it would reset itself and not act up again, till I drove aggressively. If I drove smoothly / easy on her, rarely would have an issue.

Update! There were 2 boxes in the US and I grabbed one of them, box will be installed by end of week, unless the 17"+ of snow tomorrow delays it!

    Hey Tarek,

I asked again and the simple answer from Ferrari was an "internal failure". Again, my tech thought it was the speed sensor, given the "symptoms". However, it must have been more than that, for Ferrari to chose to eat a $40k job vs a $10k job. Regardless, I'm stoked to have a brand new trans in my car and one that comes w/ a 2yr warranty to boot!

I’m not stoked to hear they’re still charging 40k usd for a new tranny on these things. I’m hoping they managed to work out the flaws on these trannys by MY 2015 cars; still no good reference on generation #’s for the Getrag though! It appears the problems stopped after MY 2014 cars though from all the reading I’ve done. Don’t hear too many issues with a MY 2015 AMG GT!

i've read so many gearbox problems for 458 and cali. i wonder out of 100 of 458's/cali , how many are having the gearbox issues ? i'm about to buy one and the seller claimed his 458 are having zero gearbox issues (2011 458 with 9k mileage) .

Buy the best 458 you can find regardless of year. Gearbox issues are rare but can happen with any model year 458. Just keep $7-$10k on the side just in case. I know a mechanic who works at a local Ferrari dealer and he has first hand knowledge regarding this subject. He services the gearboxes with issues.
Now go buy the 2011. I have one and they have the best sound of all model year 458’s (2010-2011)

I agree. Each time I see a negative, untrue post about 2010-2011 458s, it’s always Melvok. Why is that??

From what I was told, they replaced the wiring clips with a different material, that held up to the heat better (old ones turned brittle).
The changeover happened in 2012. However, from what I understand, there are still some failures, albeit not as many in the later models (thankfully)

$7-$10k if it's the best case of a bad situation! My entire box had to be replaced w/ 6k on the clock w/ a new one, to the tune of $40k!!! Thank God for the power warranty....
I suggest to hedge your bet and take the power for the first year of ownership as I did. This way all of the "unknowns" will hopefully rear their ugly heads in the duration. Also note, the power warranty is negotiable, I paid just over $4k for mine, so not a bad return on $36k free transmission replacement for me. ;)

In the beginning, the dealers were changing out the transmissions as whole units. It wasn't until a while later, that they were replacing the sensor/wiring harness.

Correct, however the dealer consulted Ferrari and it was determined mine was beyond those repairs (they were the initial thought), so they gave me a new box. I could care less if somebody "might" have been wrong or not, I'm good. :)

Thanks, but that wouldn't have swayed Ferrari to give me a new box. They really took it on the chin $ wise, so further testament to what they saw diagnostics wise, must have warranted a new box....
