Hello, As I'm doing some service work on my 458 Italia, I thought it would be a good time at 40k miles to renew the transmission oil as, to my knowledge, it has never been changed previously. I've read the Ferrari service documents, however, when I removed the filler plug (to check the current level) about half a litre of oil drained out of the filler plug hole. Am I correct in thinking this has been slightly overfilled (either from the factory or by someone before I owned the vehicle)? I believe the filler hole also controls the fluid level, i.e. you should slowly fill the gearbox with approximately 3.9 litres of oil, then allow some to drain back out of the hole until the flow of oil stops? Would appreciate any advice!
Yes, there is a standpipe in the filler hole that determines the fill level, If you are talking about the DCT hydraulic side of the 458 transmission. I suspect if yours drained quite a bit out of the fill hole that it was probably overfilled a bit. I just did this with the some friends and they made a video of it attached 5 min into video it shows the standpipe fill level, you just let it drain until stops and it is at the correct level at the appropriate temp.
Thanks, but no, I'm on about the transmission oil (the lubrication for the gearbox), not the hydraulic clutch fluid. The filler plug for the transmission oil is on the back casing of the gearbox.
Here is the video on my 458 for the gearbox if that is any help. if yours drained a half a liter upon opening the fill hole I'd say it was way overfilled. As you can see in the video it drained an ounce or so but not much upon removal of the fill plug. My friends are very careful and checked the fill level 3 times before sealing the fill hole plug.
Not that easy answer. Firs of all, level has to be checked at certain temperature; so maybe, if you opened drain plug when cold, maye now you are running low. Leveling has a very specific procedure and you need special software to activate pumps, clutch, etc. On the other hand, there’s a gasket seal that isolates low and high pressure, gearbox and clutch, and if it’s damaged, then clutch oil will move onto gearbox. Obviously if it happens you need to dismantle the gearbox. If you drive hard your car, I’d change both oils every 20/25k. You’ll do it once or twice in a lifetime, not big deal though.
I think he is talking about checking /changing the trans fluid procedure. Personally I would refer to an official Ferrari workshop manual. There might need pumps to run, software checks and pectinate info on gaskets ect.
Oli change on these Getrags is not that simple like, drain oil and fill it in with x liters and back to the road. I’ve seen a F dealer following the procedure and it’s not simple at all. You need to warm and activate pump/clutch/reverse/neutral several times through electronics in a certain way to correctly feed/purge it. Ask any dealer/independent
OK, it is bizarre that you replied to me, since all I stated was "good stuff" to Snapshift's video. It appears you didn't watch the video.
