This was the 35th year of the SSCC and the 90 miles of public highway closed for the event was named the Silver State Classic Challenge Highway. Shipped my 458 by truck, along with 5 other cars from Canada, then drove back 1500 glorious miles along pacific Hwy along California, Oregon and Washington State. Hats off to the SSCC organizers, so thorough and professional. I say this bc we failed their tech inspection and had to scramble to meet pre-race criteria for the half mile shootout and 90 mile time trials on (closed) public highway. And, they assigned 4 people to inspect every inch of every tire of every car on every event to assure safety. Btw, the 458 performed great in all respects.

Would you mind elaborating more on how you failed their tech inspection?

Yes, the car you see, my 458, is Blu Mediterranean. IMHO, stunning color in both rain and shine, unlike my prior 360 in TDF blue that looked drab on cloudy days.

Embarrased to say we failed the technical inspection (meaning me and my copilota) because we didn't pay enough attention to all the regulations. First, one of our helmuts was Snell rated before but not after 2005, as required. Second, one of us had driving shoes with pin prick holes, not sufficiently fire resistant. As the race started in Ely, 4 hrs. from Las Vegas we were in a pinch but managed to order stuff by phone and have it delivered.

Yes, the Silver State Challenge is nothing to mess with. If you go off the road, help will not arrive for some time. Tragically, last year both the driver and copilota died when a car went off the road at high speed and caught fire.

The organizers work hard to minimize accidents including (i) a requirement to qualify on a track with an instructor before the race, (ii) speed classes based on experience, and (iii) penalties if rules are violated when participating in the race. For example, they plant speed traps in collaboration with the local police and if one exceeds the top speed for one's speed class, one is disqualified.

So, as you can imagine, it gets complicated but rewarding just the same.

Btw, the SSCC has been operating for 25 yrs, not 35 as I previously posted.
