Hi everyone, With the release of the new, fast and mean 488, the 458 is imho of great value to enthusiasts and Ferrari historians in the future. I was just thinking it would be very cool to enlist all milestones the 458 represents: - Last Ferrari with Pininfarina badge. - First mid-engined Ferrari to have direct fuel injection. - First Ferrari to have a 9.000rpm redline. - First mid-rear engined Ferrari to have a double clutch gearbox. - Last naturally aspirated V8. - First V8 to surpass the 200mph topspeed barrier. - First mainstream model not to be offered with an option of a manual, gated gearbox. Other curiosities: - Input from Michael Schumacher. - Three exhaust tailpipes, homage to the F40. At the time of lauch, don't know if engine compression ratio and output per liter are brand records. What milestones/curiosities am I missing? Thank you all for your input!
Trivial compared to above but the first Ferrari (or first car ever) to have its own font (with the 8 being raised in related to the 4.5).
The first V8 to crack the 200mph barrier isn't the 458? The F430 Scuderia perhaps? And isn't the 458 the last V8 badged by Pininfarina? Thought it was. If I'm not mistaken: 458 Italia/Spider: 127 horsepower per liter. 458 Speciale: 134 horsepower per liter. (Records for naturally aspirated engines). +458!!!!!!!!!! Kind regards, Nuno.
Still at a loss regarding the last Ferrari V8 with a Pininfarina badge, but still pretty sure it is the 458. Regarding official top speed by Ferrari (mainstream V8 cars), the 458 is indeed the first V8 Ferrari to have an official top speed of 200mph+ (F430 Scuderia, according to the official website: 198mph). Kind regards, Nuno.
Can anyone dispute or confirm? This was 'practically' true as of a few years ago as far as major brands available in production: Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Bugatti, Koenigsegg, Pagani, Audi, Porsche, etc. IMHO, this is one of the reasons why the 458 looks as good as it does. The design is a masterpiece by Pininferina. The lack of body side vents is not just unique to Ferrari cars, but to the entire industry.
The 2016 F12 is the last. It's a technicality because the 458 ended its models year in 2015 and the California ended in 2014. The Cal T no longer wears the Pininferina badge starting in 2014. I believe the F12 is last joint design between Ferrari and Pininferina. All models now are 'Centro Stile Ferrari', hence no badge.
I am not sure if you are saying that the 458 SA wears the Pininferina badge? As far as I know, none of the Speciale variants, except a number of 458MM's, wears the badge.
Hence, the 458 is the last Ferrari V8 to carry the Pininfarina badge and the F12 the overall last Ferrari to carry the Pininfarina badge. Thanks for clearing it up, it's pretty cool and I personally love these details! I believe the 458 (and all its variants/special editions) will have a very special place in Ferrari's history. A wonderful last hurrah, the ultimate swansong, a series of firsts and lasts in Ferrari's history. Same with the F12, if its successor isn't naturally aspirated. Regarding the cracking of the 200mph+ top speed barrier for a V8, I'll have a look at the car's official brochure and see if I can come up with a reliable source. By briefly checking the Ferrari.com website, the 458 is indeed the first V8 to achieve that. Kind regards, Nuno.
lack of body side vents This is in large part, and the Pininfarina legacy, why I drive the car. Image Unavailable, Please Login
wouldnt the F40 be the first V8 ferrari to crack the 200mph barrier? that was a pretty big point in that it went 201. Ferrari made plenty of them too. it's a turbo car, but it's still a v8
All around the 458 Spider is one of the best ever. Nothing compares to it's sound in 3rd gear at just below redline! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Nothing beyond F12 berlinetta is PF design. Just agreeing and also correcting that the 458 SA (not Italia) was the last 'introduced' V8 to date. However, it remains to be seen which model technically had the last V8 itself as I believe all versions were being made at the same time in the end. Collectability, however, is more based on exclusivity which still puts the SA as the desirable version though not like the truly older models.
I believe you are correct. However, I bet they will have made quite a bit more 458 than F40 when we know how many were made. Probably something like 15-18k. vs 1311 F40. PS great thread and I agree the 458 will go down as a special car.
the 458 is the last of the pure design of PF - its lack of presence in all follow on models including the Speciale and SA is very apparent. PF would likely have done more than just apply novitec like ripoff add ons......
