I was driving aggressively in Race Auto Mode and downshifting from 4th to 3rd and may have over revved the engine past 9000 (I am guessing as I was too busy looking at the road) - the car upshifted (to prtect the over rev ???)- went into 5th instead (i felt the power loss) and that too manual (the little auto sign next to the gear number went away in the screen) and staid in 5th manual and did not go back to auto for a while - so I had to hit auto button on the console to bring it back to Auto...

Does that sound like correct behavior for the 458 or is it something not right...?

What I should have done is that while in manual mode I should have downshifted manually with paddles instead of hitting Auto .... but too late to think about that...

    Will appreciate any comments..

The car will not down shift into over the rev limit. The computer will not engage the gear and justs select another gear that is higher. In a nutshell, it's idiot proof. :)

The rev limiter in the 458 works better than the F430. It does these things to protect the engine (and about 60 grand of your money). :)

    Mr Mayor.
I get your point BUT after the computer decides to choose a certain gear in case of over rev - should the gearbox stay in manual or should it go back to auto.

In my case it staid at gear 5 in manual.

    Thanks.

Have tried manually shifting in AUTO MODE to no avail. Have to push the Auto button to go into manual. Have no idea if this is "normal."

I think it goes into a safe mode. But, I'm not sure. Or, maybe you hit the paddles because if you hit the paddles in auto mode, the gearbox moves. In the confusion, you might have done that.

In any event, whatever you did is extremely rare.

My dealer service head says that what happened looks normal and wants me to keep driving the car hard in order to clean the bugs out ...
