Hi all: I have been thinking to get a 458, coupe or spider, of course missed the pre-covid pricing and had gone up a lot but recently I have seen prices have dropped maybe around 10% compared to last year. Do you think that they are going to drop even more? When do you all think it's a good time to buy? thanks
I haven't paid a ton of attention to 458's since I got mine, but other cars I've been stalking (Z8's, late 60's 2+2's, Ford GT's) are all down for the year. Uncertainty for the economy, interest rates are high, so it's no longer a super strong market for sellers, IMO. Definitely not the bottom, but I'd rather spend a year driving a fun car than waiting for a bargain. (Not investment advice
If was me, I would determine pretty much exactly what you want. If spider or coupe. Then, fav colors, options, etc. Then go shopping. It may take months to sort one out. Clearly, current prices are at least 20% higher than b4 Covid. Prices are softer than 3 months ago, but not much. I personally would try finding exactly you want, no second choices, then pay what the market is then. An opinion. I don’t see prices falling like b4 Covid, especially b4 a presidential election.
Prices are now steady, they went up way too high and came back down 10-15% and this seems to be where they are settling. Remember the 458 has a lot going fo it being the last NA and all that stuff you should know. PS: even if they go down or up another 10-20% are you buying the car as an investment or as something to ENJOY..every day you're not driving one cuz you're worried about $10-$20K fluctuation you're missing out
I'm in the process of buying a 2012 458 Italia and hope to close it over the next weeks (some details have to be fixed, PPI, etc) but I was watching the videos of this youtube channel closely. In the end nobody knows what will happen and I agree to buy it in order to enjoy the car. However, I try to avoid the early depreciation curve with all the new cars (just look at the depreciation of the current models shown in the video) and for the 458 we're definitely behind it.
I generate this chart from time to time. As of August 2022 458 values increased $75,000 per model year over 3/2020 valuations due to free money AND low interest rates AND actual increase in inherent valuation. As of August 2023 the free money is gone and interest rates are high but the actual increase in inherent valuation remains at $50,000 per model year over 3/2020 values. Valuations seems to have plateaued. Where it goes from here is anyone's guess. I would buy now and hold.
The values in that chart are actual retail values for a real cars that actually sold. Not advertised prices. Spiders included. No Speciales.
That being said, it pains me to see folks engaging in such antiseptic economic discussions about Ferrari purchases. I feel sorry for such people. They just don’t get it, and more depressingly likely never will. It is a Ferrari. There is no logic. Buy one if you have the means to do so and never look back. Or just buy bank CD at 5.5% and get off this board.
just as others said find the one you like…prices are up because our fiat money is toast buy don’t think about too much.
if you have choices, maybe should consider later model as the early model seems to have more issues? Just my 0.02 cents, if others can confirm, that'll be great
I just paid 275, or 290 otd, in august for a 14 spider with 10k miles, the only cf is led/wheel, no lift. But it did have diamond cut forged wheels, daytona seats, 0.5 yr remaining new power and 2 more yrs after that of power 15…. A few other things. I feel like I overpayed by 5 or 10k but i haven’t seen any cars like mine that i can drive over and test drive here in fla, red/tan.. etc. florida cars are more expensive… all that adds up to “who cares” about 5,10,15k on a 290k buy.. (other than the dealer). I anticipate getting back 10% below market and that’s if there’s no carfax event and the leather holds up…. I had a friend that told me you didn’t spend the money, it’s still there in the garage.. i curse him for that logic.. now i need a bigger garage Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Spiders will be stronger, but I expect a gradual descent for a few years on non-Speciale versions. Other than the recent spike, a lot of which is general consumer inflation IMO (everything but Costco hotdogs is up 20%+ it seems). I think especially as a 'first Ferrari', the 458 is still a sweet spot of useability, reliability, speed and sound. When professional/entrepreneur friends ask casually, "which Ferrari should I get?" it is still my go-to response. I can see Spiders continuing to overtake the base 488, probably end up rather close to an F8 in 10 years.
You're right, unfortunately here in Chile there are not many choices... there is one 2014 model but it already has 31k miles, beige interior, normal seats and no carbon interior and a modified exhaust. The one I'm buying has carbon seats, carbon interior and 18k miles. Still has to go through PPI and get some things fixed though and dealer was much more transparent with history and details, gave me more confidence in the end.
The debate as I understand it to be is whether 458 prices will reset all the way back to pre-COVID (March 2020 or so) pricing. While pricing is off the highs, pre-COVID prices are not likely to ever materialize again. Of course, mileage and condition dictate each car's value, but the trends seem clear.
^^ Obviously no one has a crystal ball about where any market will go in years ahead. Not even months ahead. My personal analogy: the 458 will be like the 993 Porsches TT and TTS’. Porsches last of the air cooled. The 458 last of NA. All have timeless design with not necessarily all the extra nannie’s.
Wise choice nature boy……although looking at BAT sales ‘22 vs ‘23, the only track able losses appear to be heritage cars, and the 2 lowest priced cars were both ‘22 auctions.
you'll see that the 296 and SF90 will also be the best thing to happen to the value of F8's and even 488's too.... Less than 3 years from now, I believe we will all find it very difficult to find and buy a 458/488/F8 - the prices are going to be very high! Hopefully someone will remember this prediction 2-3 years from now.... cos I won't
I think they are going down a bit more but that didn’t keep me from pulling the trigger on one. Should be here next week and I’m beyond exited! What I want to know is where do we think they will be in 10 years.
