Every few weeks I try and clean my engine bay on my 2015 458 because it gets pretty dirtly. I have noticed with using light cleaner and even only water on a micro fiber towel that a little red comes off the engine cover every time I clean it. I have had the car over a year now and it still happens. Is this normal?

My concern is if I keep cleaning the engine cover will the pain eventually come off and it will need to be re painted?

I use a master blaster to blow the dust off the engine. I do use griots waterless car wash on a micro towel to clean engine bay panels, lightly wipe red intake manifold after master blasting. No red comes off.

The outside or the inside finish? When it's clean, give it a couple coats of wax.

The texture of the red paint on the engine cover is what seems to come off (just a little). I am wondering if wax would adhere to the texture?

Here is a pic of what my clean white microfiber looks like with JUST water when I carefully wipe down the engine cover about 1-2 times per month. Is this normal? The car is about a year old (model year 2015 458).

When you say engine cover are you speaking about the exterior engine hatch? Or are you speaking of the intake manifolds in the photo that are painted red?

    That will help a lot!

I went to my local dealer and showed their service manager the picture. He said, "follow me" and we went to the shop and took a white micro fiber towel, added water and he wiped down one of the 458's in the shop. The towel also showed red paint and he mentioned that this was normal.

So now I wonder, maybe I should limit the amount I wipe down the engine compartment. Maybe monthly? How often do you guys wipe down the engine? I love it clean since you see it through the rear glass! :)

I clean it every few month. If you really want it clean, use a little soapy water with a paint brush and then dry with towel. You may be wiping it too much

I have not had any loss of red paint from wiping the red plenum covers on my 458. In any event, I now use a Dyson vacuum to get the dust out of the plenum covers and I find it works better than wiping them down.

This is likely because there is no clear coat on there, it's single-stage red paint. When you polish the exterior of your car you are removing a little bit of the clear coat every time. On a single stage paintjob, your polish cloths (or buffer pads) will turn the color of the paint.

Yes good point, I just wonder what it will look like if I wipe down this engine over the next 10 years. I will probably need to have it repainted!?

My paint is starting to peel off the engine mainfold ... this red paint is special ... any idea what kind of paint it is ? Is there better paint to use ?

Paint will come off single-stage paint if you polish it with something mildly abrasive like a cleaner wax, but unless the OP is rubbing it really hard, single-stage paint should not come off at all from just wiping it with a a damp microfiber cloth. Even cheap rattle can single stage paint won't come off from just a damp microfiber. Apparently it's not unique to that individual car, given that the dealer replicated it with another car, but the paint Ferrari used is clearly sub-par.

I would ask the dealer to repaint it on the basis that it is defective paint.

If your technique is removing paint, then you have to change your technique. I have had two 458s. I did not wipe down the red plennums. Instead, I used a handheld Dyson vacuum to get the dirt off them. It worked fine and did no damage.

The work shop guy told me he use a special Sonax Products i think a wax or Creams or some kind of liquid to apply on the Ferrari Red Color Engine and it protects and Restore the Car Engine Color ....
