Yep 355 + 458 is close to nirvana. Add the F40 and you are there.
Loved to read your post, Jürgen! I agree with you, with your 458 Spider you will have to do with 570hp instead of 670hp, but you'll be driving a piece of Ferrari and motoring history that will thrill you mechanically, visually and emotionally like no other. Not always what comes next and is new is better. The 488 is one great Ferrari: stops better, accelerates faster, goes like stink, etc. It won't make you fall in love with it like the 458, it won't crawl under your skin in quite the same way, won't interact with you as if it were alive in the same way, it hasn't been reviewed by no one like the 458 and it isn't, like the 458 is, always considered one of the best Ferraris of all-time, if not the greatest NA V8 ever. Every now and again, as I watch the odometer on my 2015 458 Spider climb towards 10,000 kms, I give a very brief thought to the resale price of my car. It lasts, perhaps, a nanosecond or two, and is quickly chased away by the thrill of driving my car. I use it daily, and it gives me the 2 brights pots in the day - going to work and leaving from work. It only takes 7.5 minutes (or 9 on a slow day) to get home from my office, but they are the best 15 or 18 minutes each day. In the rain or the sun, it puts an incredible smile on my face when I press the starter button (and yes, hear that symphony behind me). From time to time I have looked at older Ferraris both at the dealer and on carsales.com.au, with a view to leaving my car in the garage safe and sound and with fewer kms on it. But whilst there are some seriously great older Ferraris out there, none attracts me enough to want to give up my daily doses of 458. If Iwas after an investment, I would have bought a 458 Speciale Aperta and never driven it. But I know that as I might sit there counting my profits, I would be kicking myself for not enjoying one of the all time greats. Some people might invest in cars - for me, there are there to enjoy. That can't be done if they are in the garage! So, Soundcheck, I know why you are having those thoughts and I'm sure most of us have had similar thoughts, even if only for nanoseconds. But go an enjoy yourself!
I do find it funny when people keep quoting clarksons review of the 458, forgetting that was the most up to date Ferrari at the time of the review. This was clarksons quote for the review of the 488 below, If he had been reviewing a "pony and trap" as soon as it became a thing it would have been the best thing.... "And, oh my God, it’s lovely to drive. You can potter about with the gearbox in automatic and it’s not uncomfortable or difficult in any way. That is probably Ferrari’s greatest achievement with the 488. To take something so highly tuned and highly strung and powerful and make it feel like a ***** cat. It’s so docile that you get the impression it can’t possibly work when you put your foot down. But it just does. I know of no mid-engined car that feels so friendly. So on your side. There’s no understeer at all and there’s no suddenness from the back end either. The old 458 was not as good as a McLaren 12C. But this new car puts the prancing horse back on top. That video is 6 years old and like I said if he had been reviewing a pony and trap when that had just been invented V horseback then it would have been the best thing ever... Best Ferrari of all time - errrr not been built yet! 458 collectors car - yep probably but so is a mondial to the right collector group.... Most iconic supercar to date..... I guess either Miaura / MacF1 .... Can't keep quoting old news as current... It would be really good if someone on here new JC and got him to do a guest blog/Q/A session... The 488 exists.. and it's what some people want for sure. But there are others that only want a 458. I'm not sure Ferrari could make normal production car that I would want more than the 458. Sometimes it still surprises me to see it in the garage.
Maybe its me but whenever I see 458 its looking dated. At some point it may be a classic but thats 20 years away.
Thank you for helping me reset my gyroscope. I've found the love of driving the 458 over the fear of depreciation. Setting the lower right corner of the left TFT desplay to mileage (fuel miles remaining) vs. total or trip miles also helped. Total miles out of sight is out of mind.
He said the 355 was the best car in the world also. He even bought one. The 458 is an awesome machine, but so was the 355. time tells all.
Agreed. In my humble opinion, when the next car is an evolution of the former in terms of design (as the 488 is in relation to the 458 - and opposed to the revolution that the 458 was in respect to the F430), the former tends to hold its value better and for longer (another example: 550 and the subsequent 575). Speaking purely in terms of design, it is my humble opinion that the 360 and the F430 weren't Ferrari's nor Pininfarina's best moments. Namely in the front section. Quoting Clarkson again: "Seems like a peasant is smiling at you". They are the only two Ferrari's that I would never consider buying, no matter what. Not that they're bad, ugly cars. I'm not stating that nor making a point for it. It's just that for my personal taste, I couldn't think of a more unappealing Ferrari. That's the way it is: I bet some people wouldn't have a 355 or a 458 even if someone gave it to them for free, and I couldn't imagine in my right mind to trade my 355 or 458 for any 360 or F430 out there. To each his own. I believe the 458's design (exterior by Pininfarina, interior by one Michael Schumacher) was one of the most praised elements of a car that was received with pratically unniversal acclaim and one very important aspect in terms of the car's demand: it's simply not aging, or aging in the most extremely gracious way. To me, if the 458 was launched today, I would accept it. I would have it. Seems perfectly in touch with our time and it doesn't carry the weight of 8+ years in terms of design. Not only I wouldn't be offended by it, I would never even suspect it wasn't the most modern thing Ferrari could design in 2017, if by any chance Ferrari would launch the 458 in 2017 instead of 2009. That (design) is one important (agrred, not the only) variable in terms of demand which, in turn, command asking prices and sell prices. The 458 is a bit like the Concorde, if you ask me: yes, it may very well be time to move on to other, more modern things... Naturally aspirated engines and supersonic flight may have been/will be surpassed in terms of importance and pertinence... Other things in the future may be as classy and fast, but... Oh, but the Concorde... Insurmountable. Irreplaceable. One of the things that actually makes me feel very happy I was alive in this day and age. Can't describe it to someone who doesn't know it and hasn't felt it (generally, the only very few people who detract/bash the Concorde/458 are precisely the ones who haven't - and won't).
