I have done a search but cant find any results. Has this been discussed before? Anyone any links? If so i am sorry for this post If not whats the general opinion of what we are hoping the spider roof will be made from? Personally i love the retro look of the black fabric roof as opposed to the metal fold away system. Any thoughts?
Montezemelo just declared by press that the 458 spider will not come in 2011. You have to wait for a few years..
No, that information is incorrect. Amadeo Felisa confirmed that there will be a 458 Spider by early 2011.
yup I spoke to Felisa on Saturday and he confirmed the Spider wud be released "spring 2011" .. which corresponds to the Geneva Motorshow in March 2011. no clues on the roof type though

A spider version is on tap as well, Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo said. Ferrari The Ferrari 458 Italia will get a spider version, company president Luca di Montezemolo told Italian reporters. The Ferrari chief says work is under way on the topless 458 and that it should arrive in about two years. The 458 coupe launches early next year. “[Deliveries of the coupe] will begin in the second half of January,” Di Montezemolo said in comments reported by Autocar in Britain. “We also plan a spider version, but not for a couple of years.” The convertible likely will carry the same 562-hp, 4.5-liter V8 as the coupe. The 458 Italia is the successor to the F430. The car turned heads with its more aggressive styling and was named Best in Show by at Frankfurt by AutoWeek. As I have read in the Car's online site it is said to be soft top as it was with 360 and 430. http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/News/Search-Results/Industry-News/CARs-QA-with-Ferrari-CEO-Amedeo-Felisa/
I did say "what were we HOPING that the spider roof would be made from", now didn't i So lets hope some posters are able to give an opinion before 2011
Sorry, but what's the point of this thread? It's going to be fabric. Everyone knows that. There's nothing more to be said.
Seems utterly pointless, asking questions for the sake of it. It's going to be fabric, what else is there to say?
Dear Lesia44, do you have a problem with life? Your constant negative posts draw my attention. If a moderator would take the effort of looking through your posts i am sure you would be banned. you are a member since May and almost only contribute negavtive and repost-comments. Get a life or at least make some positive contributions. We want to keep Ferrarichat a forum for enthusiasts and enthusiast owners (you don't say which Ferraris you own in your profile)and not for people who are only looking for discussions. Sorry to all if this post may offend anyone but Lesia44
Wow, seriously? I think it's somewhat pointless speculating over something that is a foregone conclusion and it draws that reaction? Wonder which one of us needs to get a life. And if you're going to label me as "almost only contributing negavtive and repost-comments' you might want to bother reading the history of my comments beforehand. F430 if you must know.
First of all, i beleve nothing is a forgone conclusion until its in the flesh so to speak. Reading what the Ferrari CEO Amedeo Felisa said in the following statement. "Expect the drop-top 458 to retain the F430 and 360's folding fabric roof arrangement, which will help differentiate it from the California". That statement clearly says that one reason the 458 will have a fabric roof is to differentiate it from the California. Although i personally think there is a huge difference between the two cars without just a difference in the roofs. So i think for him to comment on the roof, i am wondering if they have considered a fold able hard top. The question of fabric or metal may have been asked by others. When i first saw the California i thought that maybe the foldablehard roof is the direction that Ferrari will be going down from that point.
This one is a pretty safe bet. Not only will Ferrari want to differentiate within the range but there's no way they're going to saddle their out and out sports car with a heavy metal roof, no matter how 'trick' it may be.
No offense, but why not just ignore him? It's possible to block any user that you find offensive, mean, rude, stupid, etc. I blocked the entire P&R section and it has made my FChat experience much more pleasant....Just a thought! Ape

the rag top will save significant weight and this is why ferrrari will be using cloth instead of a cali-style folding hard top. i have no problem with this; however i would really love to have a rear GLASS window instead of plastic!!
Now something like that did cross my mind, that was one reason why i asked the question. Although i like the fabric roof a fold able carbon system is always a possibility if engineered correctly, as is insertion of a glass rear window in a fabric roof.
Here is a link you requested on an older discussion of this topic. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=255090 Since the engine bay in the 458 is situated behind the passenger compartment the engineering of a hard top folding mechanism becomes extremely difficult. Either the hard top needs to be segmented into more pieces than the standard 2 or 3, or the car styling needs to be re-imagined to fit a normal hard top back there. I don't know about fold-able carbon technology, but any kind of bodywork that "folds" will probably look different than the rest of the car using standard paint. This is because paint risks cracking or de-lamination if the surface is folded and strained to a large degree. I don't think it would be impossible to come up with a hard top solution that looks good, but I would be extremely impressed with any effort to engineer around the many problems associated with it.
Thank you very much for the link that's the kind of thread i was originally searching for (with out the negative and nasty comments i may add) You know i remember last year when Ferrari claimed that the California roof system was lighter than the F430. Do we know know this to be true in real world? If so then i think the weight question is already answered. Thanks again for the link
