So my 458 Sypder has been acting up lately. The car goes into limp mode, I get "engine control system failure" message, "Catalytic conv. temp not plausible" message, and multiple missfire codes, I also have a whining noise around 2000-3000 RPMs, sounds like power steering (see end of video). If I clear the codes, the car will feel compleyty normal for about 10-15 mins of driving, then everything comes back, but I still always have the whining noise no matter what I do.

    Any help would be appreciated

For the codes and related issues I can’t assist, however the whining noise from your steering is absolutely related to the power steering system. It is likely your power steering fluid is low (or empty) as a result of a leak in your power steering system or failure of the pump. You should not drive the car with low or no power steering system fluid because it can cause significant damage.

You need to have the car taken to the dealer or a competent Ferrari independent.

The power steering fluid level is good, and the fluid looks newer. Is it a matter of bleeding the system? or is the pump on its way out?

The whining noise is coming from the water pump. I removed the accessory belt and the noise was still there and I also heard it with a stethoscope.

I was getting the "Catalytic conv. temp not plausible" message under hard acceleration in my 488. Dealer cleared it, came back a few days later. Turned out to be a spark plug that had a broken tip. Talk about cheap in comparison to anything else...

Aside from spark plugs, I would definitely get it checked for carbon build up. And if it has it, get it cleaned. It hurts flow and combustion a lot more than people think. The 458 and Cali engines are known for this.

Carbon build up common on 458s and very serious if it seizes up the intake manifold tuning flaps which is very labour intensive to put right

I'll second that. Air flow restriction or a misfire could result in unburned fuel hitting the cats, which can increase temps. It's basically tossing fuel onto the fire. If you check YouTube for "clear catalytic converter", there is a good video that shows what happens inside your cat.

If the 458 uses a cat ECU to monitor temp, that's also another thing to check. They used to fail pretty often back on the 355's and needed to be replaced.

Does carbon buildup always trigger a CEL?

Far from it. It depends on how bad it is.
