So if I could afford the california, my comments would carry more weight? That has nothing to do with my post. Obviously you have no idea as to what I can or can not afford. And it's childish, pointless and irrelevant to even get into that. I will however disclose that my 458 Italia is on order, and the 2014 car is expected to arrive within 30 days or so. You can check out the pics as soon as I post them on the 458 forum.

The point of my post still stands and the reason I put it here is that F car owners are usually an older and more mature crowd that can handle fair criticism of vehicles they own, unlike the cry babies you find in other forums (including porsche) that get bent out of shape and defensive if any one criticizes their toy. It seems one can no longer call a spade a spade here, it is just not politically correct any more on these forums.

And my saying that the california has decent looks & decent power and is more practical is hardly being unkind. But I am certainly not jealous, though I wish I was after driving the Cali. It just didn't do anything for me is all I said even though it is a decent car overall.

Sure the 458 is not worth 250% the price of my 991S either but at least its crazy personality puts a smile on my face, which is worth something. Hence, I have done the irrational thing and ordered one.

And now that I know what a whiny bunch some of you cali owners are, I will try my best to avoid this section. I am just sick of trying to walk on egg shells with cry babies on these forums.

To all of you enjoying your car, I wish you the best.

And if you wish to criticize the 458 in that section I promise I will even join in, when it is fair.

Evolution is important. That much we know today.

The Cali's folding hardtop has influenced the 458 spider design.

The Cali DCT transmission has influenced the 458 DCT.

The Cali's rear multilink suspension appears on the 458 too.

I think Ferrari should have used a larger displacement engine on the Cali. Somehow I think they were too concerned about making her slower than the 430 spider. That was a mistake IMO.

But even with the 458, I think the Cali fills a nice space in my garage.

I'm getting my 458 spider soon, but plan to keep the Cali. (Until the second generation comes and then will probably upgrade.)

Are you getting a spider or a coupe?

I am getting the coupe by choice, even though the wait in my neck of the woods is the same for both (spider and coupe), virtually non-existant. Also they fly the car in for free. The F12 though is quoted with a 9-12 month wait, but I didn't want to pay that much or wait that long. I agree the cali has a place for any one wanting a good DD, but it just doesn't stir the emotions as much. But the soon to be announced replacement may be a big improvement.
The only cars I would consider owning from the current line up are the 458 and F12. The FF is great but has an unacceptable shape. The Laferrari, I will just leave to the celebrities, royalty and business tycoons.

In the metal, the 458 doesn't hold a candle to the 308 aesthetically. I know, I know... it's all subjective, and the 458 is better. But I almost walked by a resale red 458 parked at the local supermarket when I was heading back to my car before I realized it was a Ferrari (saw the horse). To this day, I still can't walk by a 308 without being amazed at what a radical and iconic machine it is. And you can have 4 nice ones for the price of one lightly used 458 -- not even a close call. I'd kill to be able to walk into a Ferrari showroom today and get a brand new 308 (without airbags, computers, digital nannies, auto-manual gearbox, etc.)

Re 458 vs. California, I don't know, again a tough call. They're both too fast many times over to fully enjoy on public roads. But then so are the 911, Merc SL and a lot of other modern cars. Being over 40, I suppose the 458 is the car I would have wanted when I was 20, and the California is the one I'd prefer after years of driving everything front-, mid- and rear-engined.

458dreamer, you must be bored again. You seem to relish stirring up mischief.

It appears that back in January 2013 you had started another thread called "Did you all work hard for your F car?".

And forum members also did not like the way you appear to be manipulating and provoking people on the 458 forum.

And finally the last message posted was where someone turned the tables on you.

So since you seem so interested in other people's affairs, just what is your own life story? How do you make your money and do you make enough to buy a 458?

You said many times elsewhere that exotics are cheap where you are in Dubai and that depreciation on new cars is really horrible there, so why do you not just pick up a cheap used 458, drive it and share your real experiences with the car rather than provoke others to argue with each other? It seems I wasn't the only one to call you out on that. You have a penchant for creating mischief.

And how about posting some photos of your car(s) with your hand on the ignition?

Like I said last time, you either have a gift for uttering gaffes or you like to manipulate others for personal enjoyment.

I have a bigger dilemma than choosing between a 458 or Cali - should I bring the Sonics back to Seattle or buy the Phoenix Coyotes so that we can finally have a hockey team?

this thread (like a few others) always reminds me of perhaps the best Monty Python sketch of all time, "the argument". At some point, the rational person comes to realize an effort to discuss things in a lucid manner is just about as pointless...

Yep, it's pointless …to you, me and to most people.

The Monty Python skit is also harmless since the participants were actors, the audience aware it's a joke and "the fun" is over at the end of the skit. Whereas here, the OP is enlisting unwary people to go at each other, forming negative impressions of one another. It's only a joke to him and "the fun" doesn't necessarily end when we sign off. The Internet invites this kind of anonymous mischief.

There are very good reasons why I labeled it a perversion. I don't select my words casually.

Daniel, thanks for your thoughts. I can appreciate other people's preferences for their cars and if I were to go to another car forum and create a new message thread dissing the choices made by the owners, there can only be one reason for my doing so - mischief.

I am not a Porsche fan but at the same time I would love to buy and drive a Boxster because it is good fun and it is iconic. Unfortunately, right now I only have so much space. :(

I agree with you there are no other cars quite like a Ferrari. I've always owned German cars and they are superior to most cars. Some of them are not even cars, they are iconic expressions of motoring excellence. But with Ferraris, it goes beyond that, they are just unbridled passion, completely disjointed from other cars on the road. They are on the road purely for passion. It's just hilarious, completely outrageous, to drive my Cali partly because it looks somewhat civilized, but then it really isn't and it makes me laugh. :)

Concur also. I'll assume positive intent, but am puzzled why folks have a desire to go out of their way to ensure others know their adverse opinions. I'm glad everyone doesn't want to take the vacations I do, and that they also like different cars, types of homes, areas of the Country, etc. If they did, it would be pretty crowded, and the stuff I like would be a lot more expensive.

Ideally, I'd have a 12-car garage and have something to drive for every mood (and a couple mechanics to keep them running). That not being the case, I figure having a great GT DD (a Lexus SC) and a California is about as close to perfect as it can get. It's not heaven, but it's a local call from there.

I've learned a lot, and enjoy the camaraderie of almost all the folks on the board. I don't generally participate on boards, and am still learning that some will make an effort to rain on the parades of others no matter what. I'm pretty sure I'll never really know if my car will do 193mph, so it has plenty of performance, panache, engineering & style to fit me needs. Who could ask for more?

    Best Regards, Bob H

    Has anyone heard about it?

I just gave my impressions on the Cali (which were far from all negative) and also stated the fact that it did not excite me more than other cars I have driven. This is not a personal attack on any one. Yet some of you still choose to fire back with personal attacks, rather than just comment on the topic (if you care to) as others have indeed done.

Instead it appears you have invested some time in researching my prior posts only to discredit me. It's funny, you're like a lawyer trying to discredit a witness by digging out his prior convictions. lol!

So what does my totally unrelated and perfectly legitimate thread started months earlier have any thing to do with the topic on hand? Sure, as usual some "politically correct" folk didn't like it, but others enjoyed it too.

I'll admit I know nothing about your background or earlier posts. But you want to see a pic with my hand on the ignition? Are you still in HS? I realize the entry level ferrari has attracted many new people to the brand but I didn't realize they were that young. But for your satisfaction I will get you a pic any which way you like it.

And since unexplainedly some of you have decided to question my ability to afford a 458, I will disclose that I am going to be writing a $300k cheque for it. Also I am purchasing a F car at least 5 or more years after I could actually afford it. I am not reaching out for one, which is why I prefer to order it new to my specs (be it lightly optioned). In fact other than my very first car in college, I have never since purchased a used vehicle.

Also you give me too much credit if you think I have the ability to "manipulate" grown up, wise and presumedly wealthy men.

And like some one rightly said, if you don't like the topic, don't blow up and enlarge the thread further by commenting on it.

    Hey All-

I just wanted to chime in and say that I really love my Cali. There are also a bunch of other cars that I might like as well, like the 2013 S8 I just purchased. But that takes nothing away from my Cali, which I love.

    Happy 4th,

What model year is the Cali 30 with the increased power first available in the US?

Also, was there an upgraded suspension too? If "yes", is it standard or an option?

    Thanks.

    2013, I think.

The base suspension received a bit of an upgrade (slightly different spring and damper rates, I believe), but Ferrari also offered an optional Handling Speciale package with uprated (Magneride) shocks and springs, and a quicker ratio steering rack.

I have the speciale handling on my 2013 cali. It is superb & sharp as a DD or tracked. It takes a little getting used to, but well worth it. A must I would suggest along with the CF steering wheel LEDs etc.

It is a lower steering ratio so fewer turns lock to lock. Makes it turn in sharper. Feels great.
This article explains better than I can what it does, but it is wrong about it not being better - I just don't think they had time to get used to it!!

Ferrari California Handling Speciale review and pictures | evo

The sharpness takes some getting used to - my DD is an M3 which is much less precise
