hello guys and gals Recently sold my beloved 360 and looking at some 458 models I found a 2011 that looks great but seems a bit below market value I’m wondering if there are any issues in the early model cars that need to be addressed or any recall campaigns that need to be checked prior to considering a purchase. If the earlier models have issues I always can wait a few years and get into a newer model but I like buying at the bottom of depreciation and it seems the early 458s are about as low as I will see them for a bit. So, if I’m looking at a 2011 or 2012 anything I need to know? Cheers!
Search function will show MANY pages addressing your question both regarding model year differences and specifically the 2011 My 458. As for the 458 "bottoming out", I highly doubts that's the case... it will continue it's depreciation at the same rate unless there's a market bust at which time it'll fall fast as will any high dollar joy toy (look at 2001 and 2009 market collapses). If anyone's got a crystal ball that says differently please let me know what the stock market will do over the next 2 quarters
Appreciate the candor and sarcasm (I do love some good sarcasm) If anyone can provide me any specific concerns for the 2011 other than “use the search button” it would be appreciated Cheers.
agreed, there are lots of threads on this my simple understanding is the early 2010-2011 exhaust sounds more aggressive with pops but doesnt drive as well since there's a software update in 2012 that removed that feature. The pops also tend to cause more CAT failures? My mechanic told me there's a higher risk of transmission failures in early models, but from reading on forums it seems like even the later models are not completely immune from the dct issues. Then there's that 7 year free ferrari service plan thing starting from 2012 MY and up, so you are out of luck with the 2011 and 2010
I went from a 430 to a 2010 Italia and have had no issues..have 12k miles on it. If the car has good service records I haven't heard of any issues with the earlier years. I love the pops and sounds of the engine. My mechanic told me to drive it, it's not a garage queen..i drive about 4k per year and do the once a year maintenance...just changed battery which cost me $300, that's it...they are solid cars..good luck with search. 2012 and on had an upgrade to the suspension and gearbox is more aggressive. I would definitely stay 2012 and above.
2012 and above command a noticeable premium over 2010 and 2011. However, I think all years should be good buys relative to their market prices. 2010 had the famous problem with catching on fire, but those were all fixed in a recall. If for some reason the fix was not completed, you are still entitled to the free recall repair even 7 years later. And. Ow I just realized the 458 came out 7 years ago! Still feels like a modern car!
I have had 2 458s, the first one I had was late 2011 build with the upgraded handlig package for 2012 - no pops and gear box not lurky at all My recent 458, an early 2011 - alot of pops and bang but the gearbox can be lurky sometimes, would still prefer this one because of the pops and bangs
Once you hear the sound of an unflashed 2010 or 2011 I think your mind will be made up. Night and day difference. Not easy to find one that hasn't been updated though. I still think these cars will command a premium at some point because of the sound. I absolutely love my 2011 and would never consider getting rid of it. Unless I can get a Speciale for cheap. LOL!
IMHO, 2010 and 2011 software makes the car more raw and alive. Apart from the included maintenance starting in 2012, there are no major/noticeable differences in model years. Kind regards, Nuno.
When I bring my 458 in for service I will need to put signs all over the interior of my car not update my software. I may have to stay with jt to make sure that doesn’t happen. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Pulled the vacuum lines on my 2012 spider to keep the baffles all the time. Lots of pops, growls, bangs, etc. That may be good enough for you. It is for me. Best thing would be to compare an unadulterated 2010 to an unplugged later model. The later the model the more of the 5 year warranty and 7 year free service. Happy hunting.
You're absolutely right, Steve. I'm a complete pain in the neck when I bring my 458 in for maintenance, for exactly the same reason. May be a problem for an owner looking to buy extended warranty though. I've been told one of the conditions for an owner to apply to the program is to have the car with the latest available software update. Kind regards, Nuno.
Phil, If disconnecting vacuum lines results in pops, growls and bangs on a Spider, I believe the effect will very much resemble an original software Italia. Short of having two cars to run a comparison, maybe our partner Shiv can shed some light on the matter? Kind regards, Nuno.
I feel the same. I take mine to an independent and they called and told me that there are software upgrades to my model and that they would flatbed it to the dealer to get them done for free. I said "no thanks". The car is just more fun to me with the aggressive overrun. I don't live for attention but I once arrived at a local cars and coffee and when slowing and pulling off the highway the overrun caused a lot of people and cameras to turn my way. I identified with their appreciation of a great sound. My understanding is if you let them do an upgrade Ferrari does not allow a downgrade back to the prior software.
