    The descriptions that have been posted about ignition switch modules appear to address the 308's switch and wiring. The 328's arrangement differs slightly, so since I just replaced the switch in 1989 (SN 80174), I thought I'd provide some details. (I don't know if the '89 328's wiring differs at all from older 328s.)

    As noted elsewhere, the BMW part #61-31-2-682-120 looks to be a direct replacement for the original switch in the 328, as the photos below show.

    What does the thin brown wire that you have labeled go to? My '86 has an open terminal and no brown wire.

    Great post by the way. I do not seem to have the Red Wire/Black Tape with blue connector, anyone know where that goes? Thanks in advance.

    It goes to the ABS system on ABS cars. Yes they powered the ABS from the Radio connection on the switch!

    Not unusual. They powered half the engine on a 512TR from the accessory connection.
