The fun may now begin! My fun is stripping my car down for repaint - engine out - bare metal! ohhhBOY.
can anyone explain to me the exhaust cans that are on buzz's car? i have seem several others that have these as well. mine does not have these and only has a sport exhaust and what looks to be factory black sheet metal covers that bolt to the rear subframe.
It has the stock 4 can system. The tips are connected to the cans mounted behind the wheels. Mine is a 2 can Ansa (dealer installed upgrade) so the mufflers and tips come off as one. Nows the time for Buzz to slip in those high comp pistons and make a bit more HP.
Good day Peter, As Paul stated, these are the factory four can system... I had these on my car...It sounded not too bad, but they were heavily rusted and so I replaced it with a Quick Silver... and at the end of next week, the QS is being replaced with a Bell (thanks again to Steve for the convincing sound clip)... Anyway, attached is a factory pic of the system. Cheers, Sam Image Unavailable, Please Login

Buzz, Please keep the pictures coming as the work progresses. And, are you going to do anything else, while you're in there? John
thank you for the drawing. that is not the same exhaust system that i have as the headers are different. i think i have the sport header system or what i have been told are 365bb headers. can we get clarification on what system is which and why my 512 bbi would have 365 headers?? thank you. peter
The thread "365 headers on a 512" beats this to death. Its an option, dealer installed or after the fact, aparently better than the 512 set-up but all are a big compromise. The rear headers (boxers have 4) are so poorly made to fit around the axle shafts that I would be tempted to get some tubi headers or make my own rear ones to let it breath better. With the 365 headers (sport headers) you are limited to an ansa system as far as I know.
Pics and text as they become available. Other work? I gotta say: probably not. I've cooled to the whole hidden-resto thing. If she runs well that's great. Of course, if we find a problem, then I'll explore all options!
Something like this from Norwood....? 512 BBi This is our Boxer piston for turbo application or to raise compression on a normally aspirated engine Forged piston with dome and valve reliefs Compression ratio- 10:1 (can be changed for your application) Bore- 3.240 1.196 compression distance Weight- 297 grams .750 straight wall pin Piston pin fitting Ductile Moly gapless ring set Requires pin fitting rod to oversize pin Piston coating available for additional charge $2460 plus shipping
Buzz My Boxer is currently undergoing a major now too. I would recommend you have all the coolant and fuel hoses replaced when the motor is out, very easy and cheap. I had a coolant hose rupture on my first BBi when driving at 80mph. It was an original factory hose no more than three years old. The factory stuff is pretty bad quality. I am also getting the waterpump attended to, valve clearances set and carbs cleaned and reset. Be prepared to bend over and take it like a man Steve
Buzz, Take Steves advise and replace the coolant and fuel lines. My coolant hoses looked fine, so I didn't change them. Since then two of them have popped. Quick and easy with the engine out, not so with the engine in. John
For anyone who wondered what happened. Will update when things really happen. Also: I am trying to get the center fuseblock to Birdman so he can fab a replacement and get it back to me in time for the Scarsdale Concours.
Shiny copper for sure but the left block is white and the right one is black. Steve Arena, mechanic extraordinaire, believes these may not be original but in fact OEM replacements. The center block is off to Birdman for replacement. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hope the major goes well. Those BB's are great cars and with the engine out I agree with what you are saying, easy on the heavy resto stuff, but all the things that can easily be done (hoses et al) while the engine is out - get ' er done & enjoy. I wonder what else would be easy and relatively inexpensive preventative maintenance? Sounds like with your guy's experience you will have a great summer. Best,
Real work going on now. Valve lift and shims being checked and in fact 8 of my 12 exhaust valve shims needed help. Below, one of these things is not like the other. Image Unavailable, Please Login
The car was on the road for 40 miles before the A/C compressor front seal disintegrated under pressure. Blew ice cold until then and drove great. The right plenum was removed to facilitate removal of the compressor, which after further inspection reveals all sorts of internal corrosion issues. So...it's time for a NEW compressor. Which means it's time for a new dryer and new seals to convert from R12 to R134.
