Hi all I’m looking at a 488 and the seller has provided a PPI. The PPI says “rectified” for thickness of steel front brake disc and thickness of steel front brake disc. They have also sent the attached photos of the brakes from the report. Can anyone tell me what I’m looking at and what questions I need to be asking the owner about this? Not quite sure what that is saying given that the discs are carbon ceramic. Looking at the second photo though the caliper dust seals certainly look like they've seen better days.
I can understand your concern given the cost of replacements, but unless the car has been regularly tracked they should be good for 100K miles. What's the mileage on the car your looking at and does the owner have a recent Ferrari health check?
Here is a link to the listing: https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2018-ferrari-488-gtb-auto/OAG-AD-23161762 I’ve also attached the full PPI report done by an official Ferrari dealer. Service is all up to date and have records Image Unavailable, Please Login View attachment 633804
The mileage is a bit above average but nothing really wrt excessive brake disc wear. I'm unable to see anything on the report that relates specifically to brake wear, which is unusual. I am reliably informed that the ecu contains an algorithm that estimates brake disc wear based upon how the car has been driven. This should be part of the health check afaik.
caliper puck rubber dust deals are cracked from heat. Pads show signs of high heat like you get from tracking. Car was either tracked or driving hard elsewhere like mount runs etc. Need to see the rotors though. the one pic of the inside rotor edge looks eaten up and this happens when pads are used with out having the special channel cut out so the pad doesn't touch that center ring of carbon on the rotor.
With the caliper piston seals that damaged, I’d be very concerned that the rotors are worn too. That will be a very expensive fix if they are. Proceed with caution. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Sport Cup 2, rotorslook a little ragged in photos and caliper piston seals cracked...very much possible the car was out on the race track. No big deal really if the car is taken care of with proper maintenance. Caliper seals easy and cheap to replace, I'd suggest you find another shop and have the rotors looked at...or there is a tool, very expensive tool that will measure carbon rotor wear.
Thanks all. Another PPI is being arranged. Also it has the second key, it just wasn’t on the owner when it went in for the PPI
A small but helpful tip I was told about by a Ferrari tech is that the disc surfaces should be shiny like a steel one looks. If they are not then the chances are they are excessively worn.
Update: the car has significantly worn discs that would need replacing soon. I physically saw the car and the discs were rough and also had a ring gouge from a stone. I’ve moved on and looking at another right now. The brake pads are listed as: Front: 7mm life remaining Rear: 8mm life remaining Can anyone provide insight into whether the pads will need replacing? Thanks in advance
