I recently bought a 488 GTB. Today I noticed the mesh on both sides of the engine compartment lid which appears to allow rain or wash water to freely enter the engine compartment. It seems that the water entering there will flow directly to the engine or hot parts of the exhaust.

This piece of engineering doesn't make sense to me. If the vents are needed to bleed off engine heat, which I would guess is their purpose, I would expect them to be baffled to direct rainwater etc. to a safe exit.

    What am I missing?

There are drip rails down along the edge of the panels inside the engine compartment, which channel any water away.

Or at least on the 360 there were.

You should try driving through a large rain puddle and/or flooded street in your Ferrari some time. It kicks so much water up into the engine compartment that the rear window fogs over with steam for a few seconds :)

I have been in the rain with my 488 a few times..... dang my car is worth so much less now...LOL...but rain does not get on the engine or exhaust and so forth. These are heavy heavy down. pours like we have here in Florida. When I took delivery of the car in Ft. Lauderdale and had a 4.5hr drive back to north Tampa area it rained the whole way.

Next time you wash your car, you will see how the little gutter system works.

I've been caught in a rain storm with my 488. Although I cried the entire way home, the car didn't melt and handled it all with such grace! Give her a good washing and she'll shine right back up and be as gorgeous as ever!

They have thought about it. And as was said, water is also kicked up there in the rain.

It is a car, it was built to be driven.
