488 Spyder 2017 Has anyone had a complete Motor failure when driving it. I had an extremely dangerous experience when the dashboard lit up and simultaneously the motor died. There was no warning and I was caught out with no power steering or braking assistance? It has only travelled 18,000 KM Cheers Victor
First glad you didn’t get into an accident What did the tech say? I assume that the car wasn’t driven after and was towed to the service center for diagnosis
What you are describing sounds something more like an electrical shutdown which then turns off the motor. Good luck of course. It might be pretty minor. NewZealand WOW, thats something else, nice.
Hi There It has been towed back to the Ferrari Dealers Garage, however they are not there permanently and they Fly their technicians Down from Auckland to Christchurch about every 2 months . The car was not driven after steering it to the roadside.
Thanks Fingers crossed... It is highly dangerous for this to happen as the end result could have been extremely dangerous as we were heading to a mountain area with very windy narrow roads
I totally believe you about being so dangerous, and it is. It came on out of nowhere without any prior indication of a problem. That tough. Like losing a brake line out of nowhere, not good. Fortunately you maintained composure. I can only imagine how beautiful some of your drives are out there. Where I live, it stinks. I am in a suburb of Chicago and only go out on Sunday mornings because its so bad. By the way , what time and day is it by you?
Put a new battery in and try firing it up. Guarantee it's something stupid. Motor Failure is a bit dramatic.
Hi There We were on our way to a city in the far south of NZ( Invercargill) where our Annual General meeting was been held and sadly I was not in my 488 . There was an opportunity to take our cars on their race track which I missed out on. The time here is 9PM on Thursday evening
Hello Eric. I had a new battery installed in the 488 about 9 months ago and it was fully charged on the run that we were doing. I am hoping that there is a simple solution , but fear the worst Cheers
That is a bummer that you couldn't have had that time with your 488 on that run.....but there's always next year! And when next year comes we all look forward to seeing some pictures! It will come sooner than you think. WOW, you are 1 day and 6 hours ahead of where I am. Look forward to hearing back from you with what is hopefully nothing serious. I too will have my fingers crossed. Yours is the first one that I have read or seen that has faced the type of problem you have.
What is meant by motor failure ? Electrical software failure ? Alternator failure ? Wiring harness short? Crankshaft failure? Valve piston interference ? Non specific electrical ignition failure ? Battery failure? Fuse / relay failure? Or non specific software glitch? I hope we will learn what the owner learns about the event ! All too often, the poster doesn’t bother to post the denouement !
Happened sporadic engine shut down when driving to me with previous Cali 30. Long time to solve issue between my dealer in contact with Ferrari support's Italy (there are other similar cases with Cali in this forum, engine shut down when driving). They have replaced different component step by step. And finally they have found a bad contact somewhere in the wiring harness. When it's happen IN EMMRGENCY, try immediately to restart the engine (engine start button) if it works? to recover power steering & braking assistance Good luck
I had my first FF completely shut down at a traffic light once, that was scary. Fortunately it started right back up and no issues but I'm glad that didn't happen while in motion! No idea how it happened and it never happened again after that either. Hopefully something simple and not an engine issue.
Hello Malibu Guy I am a passionate 488 owner and not a technician who is able to diagnose the source of the problem. I can only advise details of my motor failure as follows. I was driving on a highway at about 80 KM per hour when ALL of the lights lit up on my dashboard and steering wheel. The motor stopped immediately and I had no power steering or power brakes . The car had a full tank of 100 octane fuel and a new battery 8 months ago and the alternator checked out by our local Ferrari Dealer. It had a service one month ago. I posted my experience on Ferrari Chat to see if there were any other 488 owners who had the same experience.
Thanks for the additional details. Again would like to hear about the technical diagnosis and outcome. If I had to guess, sounds like a software or electrical problem.
Another question,,, What mode were you driving with? Auto vs Manual Sport vs Race vs Wet? Or all nannies OFF?
There was a post about some strange behaviors, I think it may have been with braking, and there was some speculation that certain driving modes might be more problematic. Auto with Sport, which is very popular, was suggested to be associated with the unusual problems Of course no confirmation (I always drive in Manual and Race mode. )
Hope all is well, I have a 2018 488 with 4500 miles and having the same issue car turns off while driving. Towed it to the dealer 3 times and still cant figure out what's going on with the car. Were they able to fix yours?
