I had an issue with my 458 spider transmission once upon start...wouldn't engage 1st out of R, I shut it off and on again. It was a cold day though and probably didn't warm up enough. Brought it to the dealer but I didn't record it with my phone so they said nothing was wrong...record it next time and send it in...

Interesting. My spider once wouldn't go into reverse from 1st. Tried everything I could think of then drove it to a nearby shop where it went into reverse just fine! No problem ever since.

Had a manettino and lift failures prior and learned to record with phone as it happened so the dealer has it documented for Italy. Prior to that they would just drive it around and say nothing is wrong.

Supposedly the verdict was a lift sensor on right wheel that failed and triggers all other issues...

It's been a couple of months -- any more incidents by chance?

It's important to remember that these gearboxes are very smart. The electronics perform self checks every time you turn the key on, start the engine and even during operation. They will initiate certain fail safe algorithms in the event any one of dozens of tests fails. It does this to to protect the transmission from further damage. Most of these routines simply remove the functionality that would causes additional damage or an unsafe condition without leaving you stranded. Your trans must have sensed an issue with the selection and use of one or more of the even gears so it wouldn't let you select them. If after shutting down and recycling the system the problem goes away it's logical to assume it was just an anomaly. If it happens again I'd have your dealer run some diagnostics. However, it's very difficult to troubleshoot unless the problem can be repeated at the dealer.

I've only had a glitch once, when I didn't wait for all the beeps to cycle through prior to pressing the start button. Make sure to wait for the computer to cycle through its checks prior to staring.
