My hometown friend Sam Thompson is taking on the huge challenge of running 50 marathons in 50 consecutive days in all 50 states. This has never been done, not even close by anyone, ever!! He is doing this to raise awareness of the progress on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and New Orleans and to show that we are nowhere near being done. Please take the time out to check out his website and spread the word!! Thanks guys.

All the best to the guy, that's quite a challenge. I couldn't even imagine 50 in 50 States and 50 consecutive days. I ran one once and it took my knees about a month to recover. My training wasn't the best. :)

this guy is amazingly gifted. he ran the whole entire appalachian trails in consecutive days (2000 miles and took about 135 days). i didnt post it to get green, just to make people aware of the determination he has for change. as of last friday, north face has come along for the main corporate sponsor. if you go to there website, there is another guy doing 50 marathons in 50 consecutive days in all 50 states, however, he is friends with sam and stole the idea. he doesnt start until september sometime, and sam will be done halfway through august. north face has not had time to put anything on their website about sam yet, as they just took him under their wing last friday. he has been accepted to their endurance team as well. it is absolutely amazing he can do this. he started out having not one sponsor, paying for all travel expenses for he and his team (masseuse, photographer, hotel, etc.) out of his own pocket. he moved to the coast the very day after hurrican katrina hit and has been there all 10 months. please pray for him and spread the word. he is making head waves regarding the news sector as well, appearing on the today show sunday morning. Thanks guys!!

there arent...the logistics were extremely hard to get in order, but there are several days where he is running in sanctioned marathons with other people, you can see his schedule on his website...but the others (most of them) he is running by himself, but they are legitimate marathon courses as he has race officials clocking his time and measuring the distances!! email him at [email protected] , he would love to hear from you all!

This is really a great accomplishment between just running the marathons, the traveling, the logistics, and importantly the charity part.

A guy a couple years ago ran across the country averaging about 30 miles a day. He stayed at a friends house when passing north of Dallas. He would pick him up and take him home, then next morning drop him off at the exact same spot. Funniest one night when driving out to pick him up he spotted him running with a large pizza eating on the go.

Same friend just finished the Comrades marathon in South Africa that is 55 miles point to point up hill!

yea, its been tough, and he has asked for little help from anyone.....a couple of guys and myself had to force him to let us help out....hes an outstanding individual.....haha i would fall out laughing if i saw someone running with a large pizza at hands haha....that south african marathon doesnt sound too pleasant...i dont see how these ultramarathoners do it...how do you train for something like that.....

i do know that the other guy that north face is sponsoring with the whole 50 in 50 in 50 deal ran for 80, yes 80, hours straight from north california to either middle or south or something ridiculous!!! got to be semi insane, but hey, if its for a good cause and they can do it without killing themselves, better them than me!!!

Would his name happen to be Dean Karnazes?

"In high school, Karnazes ran cross-country track, but when his favorite coach retired, he quit the sport. Fifteen years later, drunk on his 30th birthday (in 1992), on the verge of an early midlife crisis, he threw on his old shoes and ran 30 miles on a whim."

Not only did he run 262 miles continuous, but he is aiming at 500 miles.

"To me, the big number is 500 miles from point to point, in a stretch, and I plan on attempting it later this year. My intention is to run from Northern California to Southern California. The biggest challenge to overcome in attempting 500-miles will be the sleep deprivation. I've actually fallen asleep while running before on several occasions. I didn't fall over or anything, just keep "sleep running" for a fair distance. Initially I thought this was a bad thing, but I realized that when I awoke I was actually refreshed. So now I'm going to try to train myself to sleep-run as a way to overcome sleep deprivation."

Well obviously if he is preparing himself for something such as this, he's already in phenomenal shape. But I think it may be too much on the body. We'll see how it goes for him.

50 Marathons in 50 weeks seems more realisitc.

I know he ran 262 miles, but don't think he has already ran 500 miles straight. I don't know him personally, I just finished reading his book. On his website there is a big deal about how he is doing the 50/50/50.

He sure is inspiration, I can run about 10 miles a day on average without getting sore after. I can't imagine his runs..

My High School Russian Teacher and Track Coach ran a minimum of a 1/2 marathon every day for years. He was preparing for the Olympics and with the times he was clocking, had a serious shot at not just making the team, but...

    Jimmy Carter was President.

He left the school after the end of the year - I saw him a few years later on a local par 3, getting some short game in, while he and his wife were visiting family. The sadness in his eyes lead me to believe he'll be haunted by what could have been until his dying day.

I hope Jack finds some measure of peace while living vicariously through him, because your friend's eyes will tell a tale of triumph.

wow, that just had to put a damper on his whole outlook on things....having something in grasps and having it taken away like that....so unfortunate....yes they will, i just pray for Sam day in and day out, because so many things could go wrong....but he is doing a great job of keeping the end in sight!!!

I ran cross country in high school and every so often we would run 12 miles. I thought that was hard enough. I cant imagine what 50 marathons in 50 days would be like.

Weird. My Alfa mechanic did the exact same thing (though I don't know if he was drunk when he decided to do it).

50 in 50 in 50 is insane. Best of luck to your friend!

I see that on Monday, August 07, 2006 he has two scheduled. SO will he be running 51/50/50? What an accomplishment. Can you PM the details for his Michigan run?
