This original and complete 5000 GT-engine was brokered by me for Euro 75,000.
Many years ago the fly-wheel went thru the bellhouse. The engine could not repaired at that time, was taken out of the car and remained in storage for over 40 years.

Now, restored and with the repaired bellhousing the engine will be fitted into a genuine 5000GT Allemano that lost its engine in the late 60ies.

    Ciao!

Fantastic. I've read recently that these 450 motors, when properly balanced, are all the business. One can only imagine the condition the motor must have been in to cause the flywheel to come off. And $75,000 into $1,000,000 seems like a fair price to pay for authenticity.

The 450S-engine is significantly different to the 5000 GT-engine! A genuine 450S-motor will take today about Euro 450-500,000!

Unfortunately I cannot disclose the engine-no. as this motor will be taken into a different chassis. I signed a contract to the buyer. Hope for your understanding.

Is it the crankshaft that has to be redesigned to get these engines to operate correctly or do the camshafts require considerable modification as well? Was the issue the balance the crank had in relation to its peak power band?

One of the British classic cars magazines had an in depth article on the restoration and engine modification of a 5000GT done in Germany. The main problem with the crankshaft was that Maserati couldn't figure out where to place the counterweights. They had no experience with V8 engines with a 90* crankshaft. The mechanical injection system was also modified during restoration.

Yep, that resto mentioned in C&SC was done by CAPRICORN, a high tech company who is working for Ferrari F1, made the FORD GT roadlegal in Europe and is handling no less than currently 15 historic Maserati racing cars from the 50ies! They also made the 450S #4502 the fastest on this planet with 440 hp!!!

So with the issue being the out-of-balance orignal crankshaft, my question is are they able to modify the original crankshaft or were they forced to make an enitrely new crankshaft?

Did they have the same issue with the tipo151 engines?

A new billet crank. The original 5000GT crank had the counterweights welded on.

Yes, it needs a new crank! Yes, all V8-engines have that problem.

Maserati had a reason to limit the high revs to 5.500 with the Khamsin (for example!). They always had problems with the vibration in their V8`s!

But I know someone who solved that problems in his 5000 GT-motor. He put some weight very much next to the center of the crank. His motor runs perfectly!
