I was just reviewing the Crump/Box Maserati book with intentions of locating some better angled photos of the 5000gt injection system. In doing so, I noticed notes in the book stating there was supposedly a 5000gt Vignale spyder, but the authors could not say a chassis number or confirm if such a vehicle ever existed. The only mention of it is when the 32 vehicles and their coachbuilders were being cited at the beginning of the section. I know it is probably a pipe dream that the car ever existed, but what might have prompted Crump/Box to mention this fantasty vehicle?

not that I know of.. There was a 5000gt vignale in the press in the 60s nut I just recently bought a Auto Italiana issue that stated 5000gt vignale.. but if you read the tech specs.. it had the normal 4700cc engine.. so.. I say no..

I highly doubt the vehicle ever existed, but I wonder why Crump/Box noted it in their book as a 'supposed' existence. Did someone tell them something that others did not know?

I think one of the British classic car mags did a feature on this car several years ago. The car was in the midwest and was red if I remember.

Vignale NEVER made a 5000GT-Spyder! The car was misinterpreted by various pupications in the 70ies but in fact it was #109.001 a Spyder-one-off based on a Mistral-chassis and fitted with a standart straight-6 engine!

The car came back to light in the US 3 years ago after a longtime storage!

Yes, it was a normal Allemano version. During restoration in the US the rear window broke. Unable to find a replacement the then time owner told his mechanics to chop the car!! The abandoned roof is still with the car! In Germany since about 8 years this 5000GT is still for sale by various dealers here in The Fatherland - without success! The car needs a complete restoration to its original specs otherwise I cannot see a sale in the price-figure the owner has in mind!

    Ciao!

It looks very nicely finished but to me, Maserati or not it's just an ugly styling exercise with or without the roof.
It kind of looks like the owner wanted it to be a Mercedes 300 convertible.

    Walter,

Try explaining to my Korean wife what is a 'handsome' Italian car. SHe can't stand any of them, but she loves old Porsche 911s! To her, all cars need to be cute.

The chopped 5000GT use to live in north Georgia for some time. It was part of a large collection that was auctioned off around 2000 after the owner died. He had a ton of cars, many of them in sad shape; the collection made no sense. I found the 5000GT spyder conversion to be quite interested. It reminded me of a Rolls convertible with the big hump on the back with the top down. Paint and interior were rather nice but I doubt that massive V8 engine received any maintenance. I think it sold for around $65K, which was tempting but I chickened out not knowing thE condition of the engine (mucho expensive if one makes a mistake!)
